G´day there everyone,

Just a simple question. I have to do a quick visit to Melbourne to visit someone in the cancer ward of the Epworth Hospital in Richmond.

I do not know Melbourne very well and am reluctant to hire a car and get lost. I just need to get quickly from Melbourne airport to the hospital and back. I can only be there a day, so was wondering what advice people could give me regarding how long it would take to get from airport to hospital, and then back again, most likely in a taxi (have no idea if Melbourne has reliable trains, etc). Would probably be doing both legs in peakish times (depart airport about 900am and leave hospital around 3pm for return to airport. On a weekday.

Any comments or advice much appreciated.

Leaving the airport at 9 am the worst of the traffic on the Tullamarine tollway would be over but I'd still budget for least 45 minutes to get to Epworth. Trains aren't that bad but from the airport you'd have to catch the Skybus to Southern Cross station and then a train to Richmond West. Unless cost is an overriding concern, and to save yourself hiring in a city you're not familiar with, go the taxis. Cost might be roughly $50 each way? Likewise leaving 3 pm you wouldn't get caught in too much traffic back on the Tullamarine - current roadworks around the Western Ring Road slow things down both inbound and outbound a bit at the moment but no major hassles usually.

Hope the person you're visiting is doing all right under the circumstances.

I was in Melbourne for a few hours on Friday night, Saturday.

I landed in Melbourne and took the Skybus to Southern Cross station, buses every 10 minutes during peak time.

Then when I got to Southern Cross station walked out side to the taxi rank and caught a taxi to a place in Carlton(cost $10)

You can buy return tickets at SkyBus - City. Airport. Express. or you can buy them at the counter outside arrivals.

Then just do it in reverse taxi back to southern cross then skybus back to the airport.

I wouldn't recommend taxi from the airport.

I hope this helps.

Could take a Taxi from the airport to Epworth $50 - $60 depending on traffic

Or take the Skybus to Spencer St terminal (Southern Cross train station) when the bus terminates.

Then take Tram no 75. There is at tram stop where the Skybus terminates.
Tram 75 goes past Epworth. Tram journey time is 18 minutes
Home - Public Transport Victoria Put in
(a) Station : Southern Cross
(b) landmark - Epworth Richmond

You will need to buy a ticket. Simplest way is to go into the station and buy a daily ticket.
The same ticket can be used on trams & trains, but not Skybus

Or take a taxi from Southern Cross train station (Skybus terminal ) to Epworth

In peak times trams are faster than cars
From the airport the Skybus is faster than cars
Is difficult / expensive to find a car park at Epworth hospital area

That trumps all my recommendations.

Good on you bossreggie.

Guys, this is why I love this forum.

Someone very dear to me is suddenly in a very bad situation, the outlook is not good, and as such i am in the midst of making emergent travel arrangements to try to see them for possibly the last time. I needed some very swift and good advice, and this has yet again proven the perfect place.

Eastflyer, Mwenenzi, and Bundy Bear, I thank you for the info - I really have no idea about Melbourne! I sincerely appreciate your replies.

BR, I have seen the amazing things you have done for others, and yet I am amazed at your generous offer to me. I will PM you.

AFF is truly an amazing brother/sisterhood. So many different people from so many different walks of life. But each individual seems to have a certain spark that makes the interactions so wonderful.

Thank you!
Judd.

An excellent and generous offer bossreggie.

A most generous offer from bossreggie. Juddles, I wish you all the best

I did almost that same journey probably 50 times by taxi last year. 9am is just outside of rush hour so the traffic should be clear at that time. Should take 30 minutes, but could take 45 or a bit longer if there is an accident or road works.

If you do have to have to take a taxi for some reason or change of plan. It can be difficult getting a taxi at around 3-4pm as a lot of taxi drivers change shift at that time. But generally should only be a short wait. Taxi fare should be about $50-$60 each way depending on traffic.

Similarly 3pm is just before rush hour so the roads should be pretty clear at that time. So should only be a 30 minute trip. Sometimes on a Friday traffic gets a bit heavier earlier. If possible I would avoid a Friday if it is easy to do so.

Unrelated to the OP, but in your case of going to/from Carlton, this may be a better option - easier, cheaper and quicker:

Hear, Hear.

There are so many negative sites and forums on the internet it has been so refreshing to find a forum with such a helpful, collegiate, mature way of looking at the world. And this is why I read this forum everyday.

And to bossreggie - I have never met you but you continue to impress me with every post you make - you seem like an outstanding human being. If there was every to be a King appointed to AFF I have no doubt you would be appointed!
