Hi All,

Will be in Melbourne over the weekend and would like to take my girlfriend somewhere nice for lunch on Sunday and need a recomemndation! Not interested in Crown or anything in there. Would like to find something with a nice view or something similar, and a great wine list! Ideally close-ish to the CBD.

Any ideas?

Thanks everyone!

Rob

MoVida would be my choice for a weekend lunch. Great tapas.

MoVida Melbourne Open daily, Noon to late. 1 Hosier Lane, Melbourne, 3000

Without a doubt, Cookie. Mostly fusion food. Amazing menu.

However, if the view wasn't absolutely necessary, AMAZING dumplings can be found at Hutong Dumpling Bar. That would be my first choice.

Enjoy your time in Melbourne! :D

Hi Rob, not too many quality places with a water view in CBD. Catch the #16 or #96 tram to St Kilda. My recommendation is Donavans Home Page - great location ON the beach, terrific food, service and wine list, romantic. In the city coughULUS INC. Melbourne - Restaurant Bar Functions Events is one of my favourite places, but I dont think they take bookings, I never find the wait too long.

All of the above, plus Birdman Eating in Fitzroy, no water views, but amazing food; and a wander down Brunswick Street after lunch.

Thanks guys - these look like some great recommendations!

Will have to write up a TR about my VA experience and lunch choice!

Rob, what would your ideal restaurant be in Sydney that you're trying to replicate the feel of? There are, how shall we say, a diverse range of recommendations so far - from Hutong to Donovans, with a mix of food styles, prices and locations - Hutong isn't going to deliver on the wine front. Sunday lunch is not an easy gig in melbourne.

Of the list so far, coughulus is away the best food, but it is a converted warehouse on a CBD street and as said it doesn't take reservations. Movida is well known, but Bar Lourinha and Anda are better. Sunday mornings are busy there, so might be a wait for lunch - but their bar area is pleasant. All the Press Club group are open Sunday lunch - Press Club, Maha, PM24 - of which PM24 would be my preference. But again all CBD, no views. The only Sunday lunch CBD place where fabulous food and view occur together is Vue de Monde, but its fully booked for Sunday.

Then you are into the inner north or ST Kilda - lots of options but not really big on the views. Depends how much you feel like travelling, there are some good spots especially for wine drinkers.

Or its sibling, Movida Acqui ...

Without a doubt, Cookie. Mostly fusion food. Amazing menu.

Cookie is supposed to have a great wine list too!

Unfortunately great views and great food/wine do not generally go together - you either get one or the other!

A couple of other suggestions:

If you like a bit of spice - Mamasita - the best mexican I've had! (haven't been to Mexico) Not sure about the wine - I've only had beer there.

Another suggestion in St Kilda with a view - Stokehouse - modern Australian, casual downstairs, white linen upstairs. Great views. Food isn't quite as good as it once was (it had a chef's hat, but I think it has lost it), but still good.

Another vote for Mamasita, but they don't take bookings - sometimes you get straight in, sometimes there's a wait.

But Mamasita aren't open on a Sunday which was the OP's requirements.

Oops, my mistake! Didn't realise it wasn't open on Sunday.

Apologies, I was wrong about Stokehouse, too! It had one hat last year, but now has two hats.

rlarosa, where did you end up going?

I'll add to the recommendation for Movida but there is definitely no view!!!

For a view you could try The Point, its on the side of the lake in Albert Park. Huge wine list and nice view.
The Point | The Point, best steak restaurant in Victoria and Australia offers gift vouchers, wedding receptions, corporate functions, and an extensive wine list

Grossi Florentino or the two more casual restaurants on site. I'm going Saturday night, can't get enough of the traditional, tasty Italian food in the main restaurant. Expensive but good value.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! As usual all our plans changed, and we ended up eating dinner in a wonderful little restaurant on Brunswick St called Madame Soussou. Cute little French Bistro style palce. Great food and wine!

Will be back down there soon so will try out some of the many other suggestions .....
