I am needing to pick up some medical equipment for my son from Los Angeles or any major city as i can get it sent to any location within the USA

I need to try and get there in approx 2 weeks but am happy to wait a little longer (early october) if i can get it cheaper i only need about 3 days gap from getting there and returning.

I would prefer Qantas for the points/lounge use, but if not i would prefer an airline with a good luggage allowance as the equipment is around 20kg and i will need to split it between 2 bags and pay the extra luggage if need be. i have often seen cheap fairs with Qantas that run through different countries to get to the USA i am not stressed if i have to airport skip if with a decent airline.

Any help would be appreciated.

ourjeb.com is my sons website we are picking up a special walker for him, we are very excited to get it as soon as possible.

Have you considered the package forwarders such as myUS.com?

It provides for a USA delivery/postal address.

The walker can be sent there, then they will send it to you for a fee, but that would be less than actually flying there etc.

I checked and the shipping was over the top, and i have also been given a travel voucher to use to collect it so it essentially is saving be a lot collecting it myself.

Unfortunately school holidays start in a couple of weeks (meaning generally less availability/higher fares). If you are prepared to wait a little bit, you can fly QF MEL-LAX return departing 12 Oct (or another day that week) and returning 15 Oct for $1584. The only earlier option with QF I can see for under 2K is departing 24 Sept and returning 25 Sept for $1850... this only gives 1.5 days in LAX though. Note that many QF flights are cheaper via SYD.

Virgin Australia shows $1524 if you depart on 18 Sept (via BNE) and return on Delta via SYD on 22 Sept (VA operated flight $100 more). Virgin would give you an allowance of 2 x 23kg bags but I don't know if this applies to Delta operated flights or the domestic leg.

You can also fly Fiji Airways via Nadi for $1217 return. These flights are via Nadi - e.g. Depart 25 Sept and return 30 Spt. The on.y catch is that the inbound flight has a long stopover in Nadi. They also only give you a baggage allowance of 1 x 23kg bag (plus a checked bag, so if you just carry clothes etc. for a few days in your hand luggage then you'll be fine.

I wouldn't bother with United for long-haul.

Hope this helps :)

Yeah i am thinking Fiji is going to be the best option, it was the cheapest we could find as well, its a pity can't use lounge etc etc

If you really want lounge access, you could join the Tabua club for FJD499 (~$280) and still be better off. You would also get an extra 7kg baggage allowance.
