Hi all

I have a booking from Havana - Cancun booked with QFF points on Mexicana early next month.

Due to the developing situation there appears a high likelihood that the airline could go out of business by then.

My question is should this happen, does Qantas Frequent Flyer have any liability for getting me back as per the flight or would I be eligible for compensation through travel insurance etc?

Thanks for your help

I'd be hedging my bets personally and take travel insurance as the best option.

Travel Insurance would not help you, most dont cover insolvency of a carrier and the very few that do will not provide cover if the policy is taken out after the court action is taken.

While QFF will have likely have no liability if Mexicana goes under (and it's entirely possible that your travel insurance won't cover it - read the PDS) ... it's possibly worth pointing out that CUN-HAV-CUN is operated by MexicanaClick, which is a separate airline and is not (currently) in trouble.

In your position I'd keep my eye on the news, keep my eye on the booking and seeing what happens in terms of cancellations ... if it starts looking really bad, potentially book a refundable ticket with AC for HAV-YYZ a week or two before so you can actually leave the country if something goes wrong while you're there.

Hope you enjoy your trip! :D

TID is often mentioned/recommended here, and they dont cover it:

"A loss arising from the failure of any travel agent, tour operator, accommodation provider, airline or other carrier, car rental agency or any other travel or tourism services provider to provide services or accommodation due to their insolvency or the insolvency of any person, company or organisation they deal with."

Section 2 of the General Exclusions for all policies.

What is happening with Mexicana is a bit uncertain.

I had originally read that Mexicana would stop selling tickets but MexicanaClick and another sub would continue to do so (including I believed on Intl Flights), and Mexicana would continue operating just carrying passengers.

But now seems some international flights are being cancelled as well.

Otherwise if you stop selling tickets all together on certain routes you very quickly get super low load factors.
