When you run a dummy booking through the MH Enrich search engine it won't let you proceed to the page which shows taxes and surcharges unless you have enough points in your account for the booking.

Does anyone know of an alternative way of obtaining the taxes and surcharges amount that doesn't involve ringing them?

You can use Singapore airlines to do a dummy booking to get taxes & fuel charges, MH's surcharge is around 15% higher than SQ.

Make a dummy commercial booking? These are usually pretty accurate for surcharges.

Aren't taxes and surcharges often different between commercial and award bookings though (well, obviously taxes are the same, but I thought surcharges were different)?

Don't know about MH but for QF & SQ it's pretty much by the cent for commercial vs awards on international bookings.

To be honest, both airlines surcharge are exorbitant.

Agree, but not in anyway defending either SQ or MH, they are not the only culprits. QF actually have higher surcharges than both SQ and MH on this route.

i reckon when flying to kl, its actually pretty good value in J IMHO

A return redemption ticket through MH Enrich to KL in J is 68000 miles and taxes are around the $350 mark (depending on the exchange rate at the time). I think it's really good value.

It certainly is!

MH is rapidly becoming my go-to airline for both "cheap" J redemptions (where I don't want to pay more points for a slightly higher quality product - SQ/QF/etc) and "last-minute" award seats. Twice in the past few months I've been able to find J award availability with MH for relatively last-minute bookings when there's been nothing available QF/SQ/etc.

just a pity that sometimes i cant find j tickets and dont earn points on redemptions.... or flight path say from bne to lax is a bit long...

but going to kl is fantastic!!!!! would redeem for 1st if i could.

Well, First is only available between KUL-SYD and KUL-LHR. Rumour has it that, apart from the A380 replacing the B744 on these routes, MH are thinking about sending the A380 to MEL from early 2013.

That would be most welcome... where did you hear said rumour?

I just had a look online and am I right that MH has increased the redemption rate for F? i.e. SYD-KUL one way in F is 93500 miles.... while business is 34000 miles one way. This is on the A380. I did a dummy booking for late december.

I can't remember what it was previously, but it definitely was not 93500! This is probably their version of SQ's "standard" awards!

MH use a "dynamic pricing" algorithm for burn rates, rather than fixed redemption levels. You see this in play occasionally on all services - e.g. MEL-xKUL-CDG in J is normally ~51k Enrich miles, but I've also seen it priced at ~90k miles on occasion too.

I've never read any concrete info as to how this dynamic pricing algorithm works, but it seems logical that actual and expected load factor would be the main variable in how it prices their award seats. On top of that it's entirely possible type-of-plane is a factor too.

So, it could just be that the flight you're looking at is quite full, or it could be that MH have decided to charge more for their A380 award seats... or it could be some other factor entirely.

Thanks. I think it is because of MH new F on A380... :(
But the new J is still at a reasonable 34000 miles one way on the a380 at this stage, hopefully it doesn't change!
