MH are offering cheap fares from Sydney to promote their 3rd daily flight (MH 142/143). Booking period is Oct 9-31 and travel period is Nov 22 to Jan 15.
Y fare to KUL is $600!
J fare to KUL is <$2500!!

Be careful of dates.
I did a search SYD-KUL return in Y leaving 8 jan returning 13 jan came up with $3,800 all up for two pax lol

Ouch. Have a look at JQ. They worked for my dates. MEL-DPS was $800 return on the dreamliner direct. Add $50 each way for QF points and SCs.

Not for me. Still trying to help a friend get to BKK. Best I can do for him so far is AUD900 on Emirates on the way over and ~AUD500 on Scoot to get back.

From what I can see, the cheapest Y class is O. On the 8th there are no seats available but on the 7th or 9th Jan there are seats available on MH 142.
Unfortunately there are no seats available for the return flight in the week of 13th January.

No QF points or SC will be earned on O class bookings, but the J seats are a Z-class, which I think does earn (reduced) QF points and SC.

I got J ticket SYD to KUL (27/12), KUL to SGN(31/12), SGN to SYD (9/01) for less than $2600.
Pretty happy with that, given the time of year. KUL<->SGN business seats aren't great but it's only a 2 hour flight.
The flights from SYD <-> KUL are on 777, so not the latest, but still fine for an 8 hour flight.
Never travelled MH before. Any thoughts?

What a bargain! Well done. I prefer the angled-flat business class seats on the older B777-200s to the new angled-flat seats on the new A330-300s. There's a lot more space and better storage on the 777-200. I always enjoy flying on MH. Sure, they're no SQ or even EK in the J or F cabins but can you really complain when you're paying the price you just did? I find the cabin crew great and friendly and the overall J product quite solid. Hopefully, on the shorter intra-Asian segments, you'll be on the new B737-800 with the sky interior. Enjoy the Regional lounge at KLIA and, depending on your QF status (if you have any), the QF lounges in SYD. You also have the option of the MH lounge in SYD but it's not as good (it's smaller with less beverage options but the staff there are excellent).

No - I have been looking at this travel since February.

I was hoping there would be a sale and there was. (This sale is around until Nov 6th)

I'm not sure which version of B737-800 I'll be on, but I suspect not the newer version. I don't currently have any status with QF. My credit card gives me lounge access but only if flying on QF flights. So I'll be hanging out in the MH lounge in SYD I guess.
On the way back from KUL I booked row 1 seats in the middle section. Looking up on seat guru it says there may not be as much leg room on those seats. Does that mean the angled lie-flat won't go all the way down? As it's an overnight flight, do you think I should ring and change the seats?

What does "cough loads" mean in this context?

Do you only get more pitch in J id the passenger load is light (AKA cough Load)?

What is J on the 737 like?

Comfortable seats and good legroom similar to Qantas domestic.

The IFE is OK but I never seem to have any time. I generally choose 1F and read the newspaper.
