I have a little bit of free time today so thought I would review some of the places I've stayed in recently. I'll start with the Miami International Airport Hotel.
Due to weather delays/cancellations I found myself exhausted and with an entire day to kill in Miami. It was Valentine's Day and I was desperate for some sleep. Most of the hotels in the city were full, and I was looking for a day room so I stayed at the hotel at Miami Airport.
As I said, it was a day room so it had to be vacated by 6pm. I checked in at around 12pm, so had around 6 hours to sleep.
The hotel was undergoing (much-needed!) renovations and the lobby didn't look too great with loose panels and construction equipment lying around everywhere.
The room itself wasn't bad, but for the price you could get something a lot better elsewhere. There was a comfortable double bed, a TV and a nice ensuite bathroom, as well as tea and coffee facilities but that was just about it. There was no view over the airport or anything.
I managed to sleep for a few hours but was woken up during the afternoon by someone trying to get into my room. They couldn't get inside as I had double-locked the door but that was a bit disconcerting. I don't know if it was a hotel employee or someone else.
The staff on the front desk were abrupt and a little rude. Certainly not a highlight of my stay. While I was checking out a man complained to reception that his room stank of vomit. The staff dismissed his complaint and argued with him, instead of changing him to another room.
The day room cost around $130, and one night will set you back around $236 (US dollars, including taxes which aren't shown in the price).
There was no free wifi and I had to pay an extra $7.95 or something for 24 hours of wifi access.
Would I stay there again? Probably not... Downtown Miami can be reached easily and cheaply from the airport for just $2.25 and in half an hour with the train. For a similar price, you could almost certainly find something better in the city. But like most airport hotels, if you really want the convenient location (and someone else is paying!) then this place isn't too bad. The location is probably the only great thing about the place - the entrance is inside the airport terminal and just a short walk from the departure gates.
