hi can u make a mixed class booking on qf international website? eg economy one way and business one way?
thanks

If you book it as an award flight you can often get J domestic mixed with Y longhaul :)

Other than reward flights, and sectors of multi-sector bookings on which J is unavailable, the short answer is no.

QF fare rules do not permit mixing of economy and business. You can only mix business and first, or economy and premium economy.

and my understanding is you usually need to call to make such a booking (mixed J and F) - it can't be done on the website.

I was offered both Y and J on the QF website a while back (last 12 months), to and from Auckland from Sydney. I booked Y over and J return, no problem. I was surprised it was available and had not seen it before - or since.

That is because NZ is treated like a domestic destination by the Qantas booking engine, so it is treating the booking like two one-way bookings. Unlike the "real" international destinations there is no requirment (= significantly higher fares for one-way bookings) to book as a return sector for Australia domestic and AU-NZ bookings.

If you want to book a "real" international destination such as Asia or Europe, you can only combine Y with Y+ and J with F as already outlined. I have combined Y and Y+ in one booking successfully through the callcentre in the past.

I have seen mixed class availability a while back eg BNE/HNL where the fare columns across the page showed availabilty columns for classic awards, sale, saver, flexi & J.

This was great as sometimes J was around $2,100.00 one way which is comfy for the overnight flight to HNL.

On the return you could get a Saver fare (eligible for points upgrade) or sale fare (ineligible for points upgrade) & easily construct a return ticket for aroind the AUD2.5K to 3K mark.

The functionality is still there for domestic flights however it appears that it's not switched on for international flights which is a pity as it offers the ability to upsell to J and extract more revenue.

It would suit people who may not have thought J was within their price range that they didn't necessarily need to fly J both ways thus making the ticket more affordable.

You can combine J and Y, but generally not cost effectively. In most cases you have to take the fully flexible fare basis in each cabin (which you would never do otherwise) and it makes the fare more expensive than doing Business in both directions. It varies by destination a little, but from what I've seen the Business leg will always go to the full J fare, making it super expensive.

thanks everyone
yeah i didn't think i could do it
we wanted to do per-sin economy and then sin-per business
doing the one way sin-per was about 350-400 more expensive than booking it in return
may have to book business both ways!!!
thanks again for all the help :)

One option would be to do the cheapest PER/SIN (non-upgradeable fare) eg sale fare as it's a day flight then book a saver (upgradeable) fare SIN/PER & put in a points upgrade request.

Being a 737 your chances of getting the upgrade confirmed are not as good as when travelling on a wide bodied aircraft so if the difference in the sale and saver fare was significant it may not be worth paying the extra when chances are the upgrade request won't b ed confirmed.
