Qantas Premium Regional Lounge For Mackay 20 May 2011
QantasLink announced today it would build a new Qantas Regional Lounge at Mackay Airport.

QantasLink Executive Manager, Mr Narendra Kumar, said QantasLink was committed to providing a network of upgraded, as well as new, premium lounges in key ports across Australia.

“QantasLink is the leading regional airline when it comes to Queensland,” Mr Kumar said.

“Mackay is a key resource and tourism centre in Central Queensland and is an important growth market for QantasLink which offers air links to Brisbane, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns.

“We are strongly focused on providing a comprehensive network and schedule across 21 Queensland destinations that meets the needs of local communities, business and industry customers, as well as the tourism sector.

“Already this year, with the arrival of more flagship 74-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft, we have added thousands of seats and dozens of new services linking Brisbane with Barcaldine, Blackall, Bundaberg, Emerald, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Longreach, Mackay, Moranbah, Rockhampton and Roma.

“Just as importantly, we are investing in new and improved customer services and infrastructure such as regional airport lounge facilities.

“We have recently introduced new Q Card Reader technology in Mackay as part of our faster, smarter Next Generation Check-in innovation, with Q Bag Tag technology to also follow in coming months.

“With these significant customer service initiatives, the time is also right for us to build a premium Qantas Regional Lounge at Mackay Airport, located on the terminal’s upper level.”

The 280 square metre lounge when completed will reflect the same style as Qantas Regional Lounges across Australia and offer Qantas Club members and Platinum and Gold Frequent Flyers a range of services including:

  • cater for up to 80 customers
  • complimentary wireless internet
  • plasma television with Austar
  • a selection of premium refreshments, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages

Have we flashed back a few years without me knowing it?

I realise there might not be Foxtel (cables) out there, but what about a nice LCD? :p

Will the wifi be dial-up?

I can tell you have not been to MKY, you missed the big change:

"cater for up to 80 customers"

It already has everything else mentioned in the release!

imho plasma (whilst heavier) is still a far better picture (decent blacks) than LCD or LED...
albeit in a bright lounge a LED may be preferred

Does anyone know if one can buy access to a QF lounge without being a premium member?

Yeesssssss!!!!!! About time! The QF lounge at MKY is utterly tiny to the point where they refuse to let you take in guests because of the size of it. On Friday afternoons it basically fills as the mass exodus out of the mines happens.

Good to see .It's a much-needed upgrade.

Please, please, please make it airside.

I got caught once during the Friday afternoon peak with security screening for mutiple departures (now with added jets) and had to push my way to the front of the line or miss my TSV flight.

I think that in marketing speak 'Plasma' and 'big flat shiny tv' are the same thing.

Foxtel has an agreement with austar so Foxtel isn't allowed to be sold in regional areas.

I assume the internet will be an ADSL, SHDSL or Fibre Connection, depending on distance from the exchange.

I haven't been to MKY since December. So I thought to myself, MKY... Upper Level. They are dreaming right? Its all on one level.

Then I realised there is that random empty thing upstairs past security.

Ohhh I have fond memories of MKY. A man left a bag outside security and walked away, I spent 5mins trying to explain to security who didn't care at all, then I realised I didn't use the key words 'unattended baggage', causing her to spring into life, move pax away and shout at the man who left the bag behind.
