Just read this post......
I was gifted Gold from VA late last year, and have re-qualified with 61k base points... if only there were HH properties in all of the destinations that I visit, then Diamond would be easy!

and thought it might deserve it's own thread.

With HSP being the latest Hilton in Oz and news of a future Double Tree in WA, does anyone know if Hilton are intending on increasing their presence in Oz?

HSP seems to be exceptionally well patronised after just one year and I can say they are certainly way off a quality standard expected of a Hilton property. Would that indicate that with many of the "better" properties seemingly pulling out of Australia (or at least reducing their numbers), there maybe opportunity for more Aussie Hiltons?

I am surprised that Hilton have not done more in regional areas.

Whilst Accor have their Novotel and Mercure brands all over the place, I would have thought that Hilton would have more in the way of Doubletree and Embassy suites hotels.

I would probably use Hilton rather than Accor but they just do not have the properties to compete

The publicity for the Karratha DoubleTree seems to have gone quiet since the June 2012 announcement. With a mid-2014 opening proposed, I would have thought that construction would be underway soon?

Also, I've never understood why there isn't a Hilton in Canberra. Apart from the Hyatt, how much competition would there be? And Darwin, also, for a Hilton?

Problem with these destinations is for half the year, they are pretty empty

I would love to see Hilton buy out some of the decent Quality Inn properties in regional areas and turn them into Hilton Garden Inns. Also surprised there isn't another Sydney property (surely should be a must!...even a Waldorf or a Conrad?) This country is really lacking in very high end hotel properties

I'm guessing that the Hyatt still makes a profit. Darwin wouldn't have much competion - maybe the Crowne Plaza and the casino hotel.

The old Airport Hilton in Sydney was a dump and deserved to go (probably about a two star hotel). I wonder why it was never replaced with a new property at the airport (similar to the former Airport Hilton at Tullamarine)?

All the new Hiltons have been new builds of late, and they take a long time up north, with most of the recent Hotels being more apartments than standard hotel rooms. ROI on hotels in Darwin would be pretty hard with construction costs high and such a seasonal tourist/business season, probably why Sheraton could not make a go of it.

Obviously some rearranging of the deck chairs with Hyatt out of Adelaide, Gold Coast, and coolum. Wonder what Hilton and Sheraton will be announcing this coming year.

Starwood made a few announcements this year-4 points Perth and BNE,Sheraton Melbourne and are looking at 5 star developements in SYD,BNE and PER.Plus up to 10 4 points/alofts with Mackay and Gladstone named.See here-

Of course the last lot are just being looked at and not definite starters.

The Qld State Gov'ts George St precinct is supposedly up for redevelopment. Possibilities there perhaps.

***Maybe this thread is better suited to the "General Hotel Discussion" board for discussion of all proposed hotel acquisitions, changes and withdrawals*****

I noticed this recent article, where the consortium VeNuSW (Brookfield Multiplex, Plenary Group and Sydney Place Management) (with Hilton Worldwide as the proposed hotel operator, apparently) seem to have been passed over as the preferred tenderer for the Darling Harbour redevelopment in Sydney:
