Finally, I have something decent to post in this thread:

23 SEP QF 537 BNE/SYD 1,000 points 20 SC's (Y>J with ODU)
23 SEP QF 583 SYD/PER 4,082 points 40 SC's (Y>J with ODU)

<snip>

Nice to get a couple of ODU's, particularly the BNE/SYD and SYD/PER together as 10K points there was a bargain (and SYD/PER on a 743 upstairs)

I was just wondering, I'm travelling DRW-SYD-BNE early next Friday morning and being the red-eye, I was thinking of upgrading.

When I go to Manage My Booking online, it gives me the option to upgrade, but I have to separately upgrade both sectors (totalling 15,000 points).

Based on Lindsay's post above though, can I get the CSA in the DRW QP to upgrade me for both segments and only use 10,000 points? I am booked in fully flex Y class.

Cheers,

DRW-SYD-BNE shows on QFF points calculator as being 2428 miles which would make it 15,000 points to upgrade anyway so doesn't matter whether you get charged as a single upgrade or separately

Thanks Dave, so in Lindsay's example BNE-SYD-PER is 2506 miles. How does he manage only 10,000 points?

Is it becuase BNE-PER direct is still in the 10,000 point zone (the same as DRW-BNE) or is it Lindsay's contacts again. ;)

I guess my main question is: Are upgrades calculated on the direct mileage, or the indirect route taken?

I can't answer what happened for Lindsay however my understanding is that upgrade is charged based on total mileage of the sectors rather than point to point.

I think Lindsay may have been lucky - either that or QP Agents have more flexibility with these thing than web software or call centers in general.

As per the T&C's:
14. Flight Upgrades

...

14.1.4 If a Flight Upgrade is requested on two or more individual Segments shown on a ticket, the Points required will be quoted separately for each Segment.

Thanks guys, was wishful thinking I guess.

Also, would someone with Expert Flyer kindly tell me what the loadings are like- particularly J? Seatcounter and KVS don't like any 00:40 QF829's on 2nd Nov.

DRW-SYD is J9 D9 I0 B9 H9 W0 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N7 Q9 O0 X9 E0

littl_flier, I can't answer why they only charged me 10K points - it certainly wasn't my contact in the QP helping me with the ODU's and I was only booked in K class. I was expecting to pay separate points for both sectors, but I don't understand the rules that well. I rang Dave Noble to tell him of my good fortunte (and IainF). Are there different level of points required depending on whether done prior to day of flights (QF call centre or online) versus ODU in the QP on day of flight?

IainF flew DRW/BNE last week (not your flight) but failed to get an ODU as all 30 J seats were sold (and they all checked-in). He was the first in line for the ODU as he arrived shortly after the QP opened at 11am. His rang me from the QP to comment that it was full just prior to the boaring of the BNE flight. Upon his return to BNE, IainF noted that most of the J seats were taken up by miners (as he was one of the last aboard). Needless to say they depleted QF's beer stocks on that flight.

Thanks Dave!!! :p With D9, looks like a good chance.
Still looking reasonable.

J9 D9 Y9 B9 H9 W0 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N4 Q9 O0

Note the QF843 later in the day HAS AWARD J availability but is showing J2 D2.

Thanks Serfty and Lindsay! :p I guess I'll just see what happens.

Sitting in BNE QP now and enquired about an ODU for BNE-CNS. Full in the J cabin again- they seem to fully sell J class on any CNS flight I'm on. :(

On an aside, I full retract my comments about BNE check-in. Today took forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QF784 today: J0 D0 Y0 B0 H0 W0 K0 M0 R0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0

A 73H, on 12 J seats anyway.

FWIW, QF69 today was showing J9 C9 D9 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9, 763 with Dreamtime seat - you would have received an upgrade on that one. (Yes, you can ODU a domestic segment of an international flight).

Thanks Serfty, well it ended up being a nice flight anyway, though quite jammed in whY. ;) I was looked after superbly today- must have looked like a rockstar because I was addressed by name by four out of the five crew throughout the flight and offerred countless refills. :p  :p Either that or the survey I filled out about my last domestic flight this morning had a really quick response.

Well, just a quick update. I'm sitting in the QP in DRW and have some interesting news. The QP can infact through check ODU's meaning multi-sectors can be upgraded using the one set of points. :p :D The catch is that the QP needs to have access to the upgrade inventory for the next port.

Unfortunately in my case, as my connecting flight is tomorrow (DRW time), the CSA is unable to access the inventory but in theory, it would be 10,000 points.

Still, I managed the J seat to SYD so happy days. :p
