Hi there,
Apologies if this has been discussed before - I couldn't find anything on search.

I have the Law Society Amex with a couple of hundred thousand points sitting on membership rewards. I transfer them to whatever program suits when I want to redeem. However, I can't transfer to Qantas and now that my travel has changed to be mostly QF domestic Y class - it would be nice to have more QF miles for upgrades.

Accordingly, I would like to get a Discovery card but I don't want to do it if I have to give up my existing law society card (or otherwise jeopardize my MR) balance. Am I going to be able to do this? I was told by a family member that you can't have multiple Amex issued cards - but cant find any authority for this.

Many thanks,
TripleB

Ps if anyone has any better suggestions re QF earning card then I'm all ears. I spend on average $2k a month and pay off my balance monthly.

Hi there,
I was told by a family member that you can't have multiple Amex issued cards - but cant find any authority for this.

I've got three AMEX cards.....two issued by Amex & one via CBA......never used the CBA - just received it as part of their Private Banking package.

As for which one is best for you - I'll leave that for more learned members to comment.

However, if you are lucky enough to be in a position of paying the ATO, take a look at this thread http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ion/ato-tax-office-payments-credit-17109.html

My main go to card is QF Amex Ultimate Card......1.5 QFFP for every dollar & is still accepted for utilities & ATO.......not the cheapest option but while I'm exclusively crediting to QF - I'm happy to keep using it.

Also - Welcome to AFF!

I'm sure you'll find it an amazing resource with even more amazing members:D

You are only permitted 2 x AMEX issued charge cards at any one time.

You can also have AMEX credit card along side these.

I had Cent and Velocity Amex - had to cancel Velocity to take up David Jones charge card - which I have since cancelled.

These rules do not apply to co-branded cards from banks - you can hold a shoe box full of those.

I have three issued by Amex...platinum charge, platinum reserve, velocity. To get the latter, I had to give up my DJ card. Velocity points transfers to my Virgin velocity account. The MR account which credits points from the other two cards can be transferred to numerous FF accounts, including Qantas, most on a 1:1 basis.

Yes but to best of my knowledge the Plat Reserve is indeed credit card - Plat Charge and Velocity are the 2 charge cards you are permitted.

That is TBOMK - happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

I also have a Lawsoc Plat Reserve. At times I have also had a Plat Charge (dumped recently due to travel insurance changes) and a Corp Amex, so definitely possible to have a few Amex issued cards

My bad - Velocity and DJ's are indeed 'Credit Cards'.

Diff bw Amex 'Charge Cards' and Amex 'Credit Cards' is that 'Charge Cards' basically have no pre-set spending cap - 'Credit Cards' do.

Amex will generally permit max 2 Charge Cards and max 2 Credit Cards across board to cardholders - to hold above this level you will be individually assessed.

Had to call Cent today re some pts issues and just got this info from the gorgous sounding angel in Cent office this morn. Hope this helps - hope it is correct.

2 maximum charge cards could I suppose be one Cent. and one Platinum. Is that right? I cannot think of any other combination of charge cards.

They have a gold card and a green card - and business charge cards also I was informed.

I don't really know - it's all too hard for a simple person such as me.

I did continue the conversation into the area of the new pts earning regime and told her how I will prolly dump Cent cause now nigh on useless - my spend / mth with Cent gone from 30K to 2K. She replied how most Cent holders have it for concierge / travel / insurance benefits - yadda yadda yadda.

The best Amex earner depends on what you spend it on. For Wworths the DJ Amex teamed with an EDR card earns you 3.25 points per $1 spend while on petrol it earns you 2.25 with an annual fee of $99 with 12,500 QFF signing bonus. I have 2 cards my other one is a Discovery, cough earner but no annual fee and a 5000 QFF sign bonus, no reason not to get one for 5000 free points.
