Forget the cash. Go and spend Saturday afternoon with him.

His time will be far more memorable for you too in future years.

Mine too. So back to what value would you put on them?

I am looking aroung $0.007 per point.

Then you dont want to know what value QF place on them...

I'd say at least 1c a point... Just try to work out where they would take you, then halve it i guess, its still a cheap trip

Well, it's 128k points plus $650 taxes for a return flight to London Heathrow which would otherwise cost around $2.5k including taxes. So I guess to me the 100k points would be worth around $1.5k ... bear in mind that if he accumulated the points on a credit card he would have had to spend around $75k-$100k to get that number of points depending on which card he used.

For a Y-J upgrade across the pacific they are worth much more - eg MEL-LAX-MEL $4000 return in H (flexible, refundable economy class) 144000 turns this into J. J costs more than $14K but for this argument lets assume it is 14000. So 144 000 points equates to 10,000 dollars. That's about 7 cents per point.

This is how Qantas values points for purchase.

Yeah, 100K would be over $2700 (if you cound find an award that would be 15% of:shock:) so ~ 4¢ per point.

For me upgrading Overnight longhaul (not gauranteed) is the better value for awards and these generally can be considered at up to 10¢ per point.

There was a situation recently where I paid NZD78 for a return AKL/WLG, awards were available on the same flights for 16000 QFF points and NZD77 - that not very good $/QFFpoint.

The value of the points being gifted to you really depends upon what you wish to do with them!

I think somewhere between 1c-2c per FF point would be a fair valuation. Hopefully you can get a much better return for the FF points.

What a rip-off! You would have to wonder how many people redeem their FF points for these type of short haul awards.

Thank you for all your responses. I worked out I was happy to give $0.007 per point. As I don't value a J rtn ticket PER-SIN-PER (100K) all that highly. That is what they will end up getting used for. (My daughter)

Even worse when you consider I'll earn 2000 QFF points and 20 SC's ...

In a sale not too long back I think JQ were offering flights MEL-LST for IIRC $9.95. Same flights were available as an award booking for 8,000 pts and $40 in taxes (or thereabouts). At that valuation, your father should pay you about 0.4c per point to take them off him!
