I was thrilled this morning to receive an email from Qantas, granting me an ‘exclusive invitation’ to the Qantas Club in Melbourne prior to an up-coming flight.

Ah - at a cost of $54. But it’s an exclusive invitation, so it would be churlish not to accept, right?

Well, except that since I’m a WP member of QFF, I can access the business lounge there at no cost. It’s all in my booking - indeed the app says to go to the business lounge.

I guess we put this into the same category as the app etc offering me hire cars and accommodation in my home city. 🙄

Is this for your Antarctica trip already?

That hire car offer for the place of origin always makes me laugh.
But seriously, aren't the lounges busy enough?

Granted you don’t actually have to pay for QP lounge access. I’d probably prefer to have a coffee and cake at somewhere like Brunetti’s than pay $54 for the QP lounge experience.

I've previously hired a mini van for about $80, (to carry a family of 5 and luggage) that I've picked up in the city on a Friday after work, driven home and driven to the airport Saturday morning. Then done the reverse at the end of the trip.
Cheaper than an Uber (let alone the 2 we need) and cheaper and more convenient than parking.
So it can make sense for the "odd" person.
Edit: all done with the gauge still saying "Full" so I didn't even put petrol in!

No, just have to dash up to Melbourne for a day for an appointment. Flying VA up there - I wonder if I had QF on that leg if I would have received an exclusive offer to pay to got to the wonderful HBA QP. 😳
You have it the wrong way around, mate! Qantas would be offering you $54 to visit the HBA QP. Then again, I believe such an offer may violate the Geneva convention on cruel and unusual punishment

There's no champagne full stop in domestic lounges :D
Having been to a number of domestic Qantas lounges, I have to disagree with you here. There is plenty of Australian champagne to be found!

I am referring to sparkling wine made from the champagne region of South Australia, mate!
Technically only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region in France can be called champagne.

It does not mean it tastes better than sparkling from other countries, however people perceive it as superior.

Allot of the lower level generic stuff like Moët NV, Piper NV are pretty bland, lack complexity however will sell well because of the great branding. I would rather give an Australian sparkling from a smaller independent a go.

Also France has many smaller wineries in the Champagne region that make great sparkling wine ‘champagne’ that sell mostly in Europe at a similar price to Moet NV and have a much nicer flavour profile. However put it in the lounge and allot of brand snobs would complain.

The French will come after kf88 for this post. They very zealously guard the "Champagne" moniker. It's like those wannabee jokesters who talk about bombs in airports.. They'll probably start with sending in the Quebecois... :p

Absolutely agree that some of the minor houses in Champagne region(I don't know if they still sell it, but a year or so back I tried the drop Aldi was selling and it was a brillianbt drop for $25 or so) AND sparkling from other regions, including Oz, can be very good. There's been a bit of buzz over recent years about English sparkling, but I haven't partaken to make a comment one way or the other.

Definitely there are some pretty coughtastic Champagnes from France as well as the good stuff.. it's a bit like any "name brand" having the "glamour" associated with it, commanding both higher prices and reputation that may or may not be deserved.

Yes the French champagne police will come after kf88!

Champagne: a protected region in France, Champagne requires a producer to make their wine according to a strict method in order to be able to bottle as ‘Champagne’. In addition to this, it has to be produced within the zone that has been designated for the production of Champagne, in northeast France.….
