I was returning to Sydney after a weekend in Melbourne and was keen to try the 787 since I haven't been on one yet. The flight starts in Melbourne, hops over to Sydney and then continues up to coughet. So I only did the first brief stint.
Few things about JQ and the 787.
1) no online check-in so there's no way to avoid the queue. Apparently there's meant to be an express check-in for people who don't have bags but this was nowhere to be found so I went up to the customer service desk to enquire as I only had carry-on. She then sent me through to the business class line, which was empty at the time. QF's bag-drop and airport check-in work sooo much better.
2) the 787 looks great. It certainly looks modern and makes anything else look quite old, especially the A320 which was never a looker in the first place.
3) heaps of space inside. It felt very roomy and my seat (10A, first row of economy, paid a few $ extra for a "seat up front") seemed to be quite wide. I stuck my head into the J section and it looked very similar to QF's PE I've seen in 747s.
4) sooo quiet. The engine sounds great but even it sounds muted. I did note that after about 30 seconds the engines got louder so it seems that they didn't even go to full throttle on take off.
5) huge windows!
6) seemed to be a short flight. The captain said the flight time was around 1hr so either we had a good tail wind or the 787 is quite fast (or both)? It felt like we just got to cruising altitude and then we started our descent.

It was a pest having to go through customs because it was technically an international flight but over-all I quite enjoyed my first 787 experience. Now I'll be keen to try one properly with a long haul flight. Alan...? :)

Enjoy the video:

Great post & video ,makes me want to do it .
Haven't flown 787 yet ,was surprised at how much movement in wing .
You probably know by now but fix your 2nd sentence .

Flew the 787-800 (VH-VKH) JQ27 SYD-HKT on March 23rd. The most noticeable thing for me was that my throat and eyes didn't get sore whereas they normally do on flights of more than an hour or two.

Yeah I'll be keen to try a 788 on a long-haul. I had a sore/bleeding nose for a day or two after flying SYD-JNB (and return) in 744s, as well as Sydney to Tel Aviv in an A333 and 744. I'll be flying an A388 as QF94 in August so I'll be interested in seeing how my nose handles it.
And more footage of the landing:

Great Video. I'll be trying JQ47 & JQ46 later this month in J. Interesting about your nose. I usually end up with blood nose on long haul

Great videos PaulST - what software do you use to do your editing? Do you use a gadget in-flight to keep the camera steady?

Thanks ozbeachbabe. I use the detail movie making program that came with my Mac and that whole video was filmed with my iPhone 6.
No I just use my hands to keep the footage stable. :) What I've learnt to do, through a lot of trial an error, is to rest the camera on the window-sill but put 1 or 2 of my own fingers physically between the camera and window as I find that my fingers absorb most of the fine vibration.
Next month I'll be flying on QF93 and QF18 as well as a few domestic US flights so I'll be sure to post up videos on those too.
