Just checked in Sydney to LA on QF149.
Booked in economy (B), walked away from the checkin... looked at the boarding pass to see where I was sitting... only to see I was sitting in 17A
and the pass has a beautiful grey stripe along the top.
An incredible, unasked for, not even mentioned to me,
operational upgrade to J.

The Sydney First Class Lounge is buzzing!
The porridge and the fruit fusion energy drink is fantastic, the service is fast and the staff actually smile!

Certainly makes up for the abysmal egg and bacon roll they served on the flight from Mel to Syd.

So, with getting an upgrade to upper deck J and being in the F class lounge I can only assume you are a WP, so if you fly that much, good on you for the op up.

Still in the lounge, flight delayed by well over an hour.

Given that QF are down a 747 now, I imagine a few flights have had to be canned and there is quite a bit of shuffling fwd going on. Probably increases the op-up odds from 0.1% to 0.2%

I am fairly sure the upgrade was because Sydney is still choking with World Youth Day Pilgrims, the flight was full of them.
Given the dreadful delays caused by Qantas new check-in system, they were probably trying to free up economy seats to juggle people around.

Sadly my lucky day fell apart as the flight was 3 hours late into LA, connecting flights all gone and the replacement arrangements organized by ground staff were very badly handled to say the least.

You are really lucky for that.

I take it you were booked on a normal economy seat?

Are you a QFF Plat member or something?

Hmmm.. I'm travelling on a B class fare on Saturday to LA... Got my fingers crossed!
Although I did get my requested exit row aisle seat

Yes I am Qantas Platinum and was on a (B) class ticket (more expensive than K but not a full Y)

Congrats - we scored op-ups for two pax J->F on BA31 "yesterday" for mrssimongr and I - I think because we had been disembarked due to medical emergency and been forced to overnight in London- very very nice flight for me and very helpful for mrssimongr whilst still not being 100%.

I spoke to soon.. It was my lucky day! Went to the gate and as my boarding pass went through, it was stopped and the FA ripped it up and gave me a new J class one! Was I happy or what!

Just came back on QF94, LA to Mel.
My economy class boarding pass kept getting rejected as we went through the final gate, she tore it up and printed me a boarding pass in J....
so my luckyday was repeated for the homeward trip...
The upper deck FAs were a happy hard working bunch to boot.

BTW the new first class lounge at LAX (Tom Bradley) is a serious improvement on the older lounges.

So right now my Qantas satisfaction rating is seriously high.
