I had quite an eventful stay here back in November. I had arrived in on a late flight and thought this was the most convenient option. The shuttle was at JFK upon arrival and there were no hassles making it to the hotel. Checked in, received free breakfast coupons.
The room itself was your regular Hilton Garden room, perhaps just a little shabbier and worn but nothing noteworthy.
Before heading to bed around 1am I locked the door and looked out the peephole. At exactly that moment a stark naked man sauntered past my door and continued down the hallway! I called reception and notified them of this and they told me that they "were trying to contain him". I was a little uneasy about it not just because he was naked but because of the way he appeared to be acting.
I spoke to reception again a few minutes later and they had him "under control" and I went to sleep.
3am I wake up to fire alarms blaring. Again I look out the peephole but this time I see a fire. It's funny how after hearing fire alarms you are surprised to actually see fire In a just woke up panic I call reception telling them there is a fire outside my door and grab my handbag to head out. As I leave the door two staff members came up the stairs with fire extinguishers.
The staff put out the flames and said it was okay and to stay in the room. My room and the hallway were smokey. The fire alarm in my room as well as the main buildings alarm were going off. Three fire trucks and police arrived. It was revealed that the naked man had started the blaze by lighting up one of the newspapers on the floor at the room next to me. The fire spread to the door carpet and the door of the room.
I had to open the large window to allow fresh air in. I was surprised that a window that size, on a high level and without any safety screens just opened right up but it did. Over an hour later I had to close the window due to the cold and the fire and police were still there. I went back to bed and didn't sleep much at all.
Breakfast. I usually like Hilton Gardens because you get a made to order breakfast. Well... unlucky for me the chef didn't want to cook that day and the waiter offered up just the buffet even after asking for a cooked to order item. I was unimpressed with the restaurant side of things (a stark contrast to the Hilton Garden Times Square!).
Before checking out I spoke with reception about the night. When I have encountered issues at Hilton's in the US in the past they have been more than obliging. I had to really stress my dissatisfaction at the $200 + spent for under 4 hours sleep among other things. The manager offered to comp the stay but because I had already paid for it they said they could only give me HH points which was fine.
I probably would not return to this hotel again. The manager made a fair point in that they cannot screen each and every guest (naked man was a guest). I understand this however I feel as though they certainly didn't deal with the situation optimally when his behaviors first came to light strolling around the hotel naked. To me there was clearly something wrong at this point and appropriate action should have been taken then and there.
In addition, I was left in a smoky room for the remainder of the night. Everything that was out in the open (pj's, coats etc) had the stench of smoke on it the next day.
Anyway, these things happen I suppose?!
