We really need a bit more info before we can offer anything constructive, such as point of origin, how many points your willing to burn, other offers you have available (two41, CC free flights, etc.) time frames, etc.
If you have a lot of points and you're really, really lucky you might be able to take advantage of the last days of the Reward Seat SC promo but otherwise you're probably stuck with plain old BiS SC earn in which case you probably want to start by looking up your preferred port on the Best Fares page - http://www.virginaustralia.com/au/en/specials-offers/flight-specials/view-best-fares/
I have 32,000 points.
I have only been a member since August 2012, but just got promoted at work and now will be travelling all around Australia.
In the last 2 weeks I managed to get to Silver status.
I really want Gold before August.
That's when my very old point expire and in September is my next travels.
Until then if I want more SC I Have to get them on my own.
Basically I will probably get to Gold eventually later in the year but I would really like to get it before I travel next to take advantage of its benefits.
