Hey All,

I'm in a bit of a pickle here, I wish to travel to BNE later this year for my first christmas with the cousins on QF classic award, problem is that I was basing how many points i would need on the routing or HBA-SYD-BNE, when I go into the online award booking it only shows flights via MEL which are 18000 points instead of the 14000 points which I already have, I'm really stuck on what to do now, a family member has 4000 points which they are willing to transfer but the minimum for a family transfer is 5000 points and they have no other way of earning the points required.

Should I:

Call Qantas and beg them to transfer the 4000 points from the family member for me

Beg for someone on AFF to lend me 5000 points (probably not allowed)

Wait and see if a seat via SYD opens up.

Im really stuck on what to do next, any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Josh;)

As you are allowed one transfer per person per year, you could transfer 5000 points to said family member, and they could transfer 9000 back. This would be the easiest way of moving points around.

Alternately, you could call QF and ask if they have any routing via SYD, for a 2500 point fee (if they have it and you decide to make the booking over the phone).

I could try that, but I will be playing the "Well I pressed the button that I always press for Qantas Voice but got transfered to you, so therefore no booking fee"

Account that i will be using to book has already had its one transfer per year so option one is a no-go

That excuse won't hold true unfortunately. The only point you could attempt to argue is that you want to route via SYD and they are not available online. Booking over the phone will incur the fee, unless you can try and convince them it's not available online (although they may state that it's available via MEL, so you have to cough up)

Good luck though :)

I did this the other day, I couldn't see availability online, but could via ExpertFlyer. They asked for my Pin and they checked online themselves before they allowed me to book over the phone without the 2,500 point fee.

Availability for award flights varies according to status, I can certainly see plenty of HBA-SYD-BNE flights in December but given there is only one SYD flight a day, they may not show for others, however the award centre may be able to still book those flights with the extra fee. You may also want to check the anyseat awards as they show prices starting from 14656 for travel via Melbourne.

Thanks markis10 found exactly what I want by doing an anyseat, I was being ignorant by thinking that all classic awards are cheaper than anyseat, will not be making that mistake next time

Ok I have the flights I want but I still have a small dilema, the 4000 points i am short of redeeming the award are stuck in my account because i'm under the 5000 point minimum, any ideas on how i can get them out of my account into the account i will be using to book (I still have my family transfer for the year but the other account has already been used so cant transfer the bulk of points back to my account) Ive rung QF who werent very helpful and im running out of ideas

Any advice?

Buy the points maybe.

QF says no I can't do that

Interesting. Look at

Top-up Points

top-up-points.jpg

Top-up points, are extra points that you can purchase if you're just a little short of the points required to redeem an Award.
How Top-up points works

  • Points may be purchased in blocks of 500.
  • Minimum 500 to maximum 20,000 points per purchase.
  • Points may only be purchased with a specific Award in mind.
  • Members may not purchase more than 15% of the points needed for the Award.
  • Points must be purchased by the member on their own behalf.
  • Each member may only purchase points once every 12 months.
Purchase Top-up Points

To purchase Top-up points, contact the Frequent Flyer Service Centre.
You can also transfer points to an eligible family member.
Top-up points table

Pricing for points (GST inclusive) Points Price

500 A$20.00

1,000 A$40.00

1,500 A$57.50

2,000 A$77.50

2,500 A$95.00

3,000 A$112.50

3,500 A$130.00

4,000 A$147.50

[*]Points may only be purchased with a specific Award in mind.

Thats where they got me, apparently they wont class transferring to another family member as a specific award even if I'm going to book an award ticket is not allowed.

I do not understand

I think I do (sort of). The OP wants to redeem a flight for 18,000 points. Whoever is doing the redeeming has 14,000 points, and the OP has 4,000 in their account.

They are stuck because:
  • 4,000 points is below the minimum to Family Transfer
  • The usual "transfer some one way, then transfer back" (i.e. redeeemer sends 5,000 to OP, OP sends 9,000 back) can't be done, because redeemer has already used Family Transfer for the year
  • Redeemer is 4,000 points short, and maximum top-up points purchase is 15% of the required 18,000, or 2,700 - so cannot purchase enough points
  • Points can only be purchased for redemption, not to purchase 1,000 to to make the minimum 5,000 for a Family Transfer.
So, the OP really needs to earn 1,000 points. Suggestions could be on of a quick MR with a 1,000 point minimum earn, or spend $1,030 at Woolworths stocking up big:D

Got it in one equus, unfortunately as Tasmania is behind every other state in Australia I cant earn QF points at woolworths supermarkets:evil: because we already have a program which is apparently better[don't think so] (which mght actually solve my problem for me if i could, silly woolworths PR department)

Anything else we could try, anything at all?, im open to suggestions even ones that sound desperate

Cheers

Sounds good, anyone wanna put their hand up

You can have them back in november when the redeeming account can make another transfer as I won't actually need to use them

Josh,

It seems time to concede defeat and book a return flight (avail currently on QF for under $500 return) and earn some points instead of burning points.
