Hey everyone,

My QFF year finishes on October 31.

I need about 280 status credits in two days to get Platinum. It seems a shame to get so close yet so far, and the 100% point bonus and First Lounges would be bloody good for the next 12 months.

Whats the best way to do this?

Sydney-Perth-Darwin-Melbourne-Sydney in Y?

Look forward to hearing if anyone has been in a similar situation - and if QF shows much flexibility...because I'd rather do it on the weekend when I have a bit of down time and have a sleep.

Cheers.

280 SC's in about 2 days? Crikey, that's an interesting challenge. I assume your starting city is Sydney? Got much spare time over the next couple of days?

You won't get them cheap though. Do you mind paying between $2000-$3000 for the Plat benefits?

Qantas won't show you any leniency if you are currently Gold and want to be Plat. There is some leniency if you are already Plat and won't requalify.

Think the benefits are worth at least that. I was expecting it to cost a lot more than that.

So, any ideas the quickest/cheapest way to the get this?

280 SCs is still a lot and not going to be cheap to get and a lot of effort in 2 days. I would be inclined to be happy with Gold and see how next year goes

In a discount economy basis, SYD-PER-DRW-SYD would earn 60 SCs ( DRW-MEL is operated by JQ so unless you use a Jetflex fare, there would be zero earning

In K or higher, SYD-PER-DRW-MEL-SYD would earn 140SCs

This is still a long way short of Platinum and going to be costly to attain. If you did SYD-PER-DRW-SYD in business class that would get you 240SCs but cost far much more than Platinum is (imo) worth over Gold

What aspects of the benefits do you think make it worth $2000 - $3000 over Gold. If travelling domestically, the benefits over Gold are minor; on international, access to 1st lounges where they exist is the main benefit.

Wouldnt it be better to put $3000 towards just travelling in a better cabin on a journey that you need to do next year ?

Dave

The 100% point bonus is probably the most attractive benefit - all my travel is in economy so there have been plenty of flights the last 12 months to get this far. Cheers Dave, appreciated.

For $3020 you could do SYD-CBR-SYD-CBR-SYD-CBR-SYD in J classs $413 each leg and then finish it with SYD-CBR-SYD in Y giving 280 sc's. (even cheaper with K class for the last economy flights)

I can even see some D availability tomorrow to CBR for $305 on QF807 and CBR-SYD on QF704. This would be quicker than MEL and probably cheaper.

A SYD-ADL-PER return in J would be 280sc's for around $3500, but flight times are horrible and would involve an overnight and basically a 24 hour trip.

I've hunted around for some better ones (including things like SYD-MEL-CNS or SYD-MEL-AKL etc) but can't get the 280sc's in a single return flight.

$3000 will get you a return SYD-BNE-DRW/DRW-ADL-SYD in J (260 Sc's), which would leave another 20 to be earnt (and would give you an illegal 15 minute connection in Darwin - way too close for comfort!). If you wanted to overnight, you could possibly get that done, with a short return to MEL to have the full number.

Sydney is actually quite a tricky source port for cheap SC runs. At this late notice, I can't price anything closer to the $2000 mark.

280 SC's as follow for $2754. Best I can do at the moment. A little boring routing but gets the job done.

30 October

SYD-CBR Depart 9:45 Arrive 10:35 $305 40 SC's

CBR - SYD Depart 11:25 Arrive 12:15 $235 20 SC's

31 October

SYD-CBR Depart 7:20 Arrive 8:15 $233 20 SC's

CBR-SYD-BNE Depart 9:45 Arrive 12:05 $784 80 SC's

BNE-SYD-CBR Depart 13:15 Arrive 17:30 $784 80 SC's

CBR-SYD Depart 18:10 Arrive 19:00 $413 40 SC's

The additional 50% bonus on miles for trips > 1000 miles is not worth a huge deal and I cannot imagine that it reaches anywhere close to $2500 . e.g. it costs 142000 for an economy return to London whilst $2500 would buy a flexible economy ticket to London. This would suggest to me that the addtional 50% miles would have to generate around 142,000 miles to be of value so would require that 284,000 miles be flown to break even

I know the word "mad" is bandied about when it comes to extreme SC runs, but honestly, you'd have to be insane to travel to HNL on JQ, only to turn around and come straight back, again on JQ!

Cheers,
- Febs (not a fan of JQ).

Well, it was achievable and fitted the requirements. :p

280 SCs - If planned and there is a week or two, can be had in OZ for ~AUD1600 - In the US for <AUD800.

I haven't run the numbers (too early in the day), but it might make sense if he wants to fly J to Europe with points. In that case, the cost of the ticket might make the $2,500 for the Plat staus worthwhile (assuming, of course, that he will fly enough miles on paid fares to accrue the necessary FF points for the J ticket).

How? By doing several SYD-CBR returns on discounted J fares, possibly with a SYD-MEL-SYD in JQi for variety's sake?
