Same, at the current exchange rate and over 100000 miles it works out at about AUD 0.0286 per mile.

it's about 2.09 US cents/mile, which is pretty much what it's been the last few promos... except now the AUD rate is horrible.

One would have to be desperate to purchase miles at this A$ price point

I don't know it all depends on what your after? Economy then no way.

I do however find that 2 First class one way tickets from Sydney to Abu Dhabi for under 3 grand Aussie very desirable ;-)

Can I just confirm with anybody that knows the following. If I sign up to AAdvantage then purchase miles/points I can then use those points to redeem flights on any of the one world group airlines ? Also can I do this if I have never actually flown with one of these airlines and accumulated the miles/points in the traditional way ?

Yes & Yes - also other AA partners such as Etihad.

Note than you can book with a 5 day hold then buy/transfer the points to your account to pay for the travel.

From memory think you need to be a AA Advantage member 20 days before purchasing miles.

You won't be able to use them to upgrade on non-AA flights though

Thank you. It sort of seems too good to be true hence my question. We normally fly Etihad. Do you know what the process is to use the points with them ?

thanks to the others re time frames etc.

You have to wait 30 days after signing up before you can purchase miles so im afraid you have missed out on this promotion.

Yep I knew I would miss the bonus but even at the normal exchange rate of cash for miles it is still a far better cost than paying full price for business class tickets.

There's some useful reading material, here:

How To Search Etihad Award Space Using American AAdvantage Miles - One Mile at a Time

Then, when you have the general idea, there's a thread on FlyerTalk, here:

How to: Use AA Miles to Book Award on Etihad / EY (Consolidated) - FlyerTalk Forums

There's quite a bit to digest, and it may take a few reads of some of it, but well worth it.
