Hi All,
I checked in 2 bags, 6 weeks ago for my European Holiday trip. Booked via QF website and on 1 PNR. Y Class all the way.
SYD-SIN(QF)
SIN-LHR(QF)
LHR-BUD(BA)
Checked in at SYD F Check in. Not a problem and 'total weight' was under 23kg for the 2 bags.

I was a little bit confused yesterday when l checked in for my return to Oz.
BUD-LHR (BA) - Terminal 2B Budapest.
LHR-BKK (QF)
BKK-SYD (QF)

As we all know, the rules changed recently regarding baggage and l was certain that QF WP's would get 2 bags.

I was told at check in that l would have to pay for a second bag, even though the total was under 23kg.

I am a current QF Plat and l was starting to panic a little at BUD that I would get slugged some sort of ridiculous baggage excess fee. In the end, they (BA at BUD) let me off.

So, my question is, how do the baggage weight systems work? I had a 'quick' look on the QF website and couldn't find too much in regards to this issue when flying on another OW Member, even though it was booked via QF.

From the QF Website

Found this near the bottom of that page:

Note: No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg (70lb). Other than to and from the Americas, there is no restriction on the number of pieces within the weight allowance for international travel.

Was it a BA operated but QF numbered flight?

From this link:
http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagchk/public/en_gb

it appears BA do not offer QF or OW elites extra checked baggage allowance.

Yes, l was rather stumped myself gowatson. 'Total Weight' was under 23kg

BUD-LHR - BA869
LHR-(BKK)-SYD - QF2
Booked via QF website. I haven't seen any QF Code-shares departing BUD, but there was one from TXL (Berlin)-LHR a few weeks ago.

According to the BA web site, 1 bag is all that you would get as the flight sector was domestic Euro:
British Airways - Checked baggage
and BA do not give QF WPs/SGs any extra baggage allowance.

Like you I would have had a few words with the check-in staff, who seems were giving you a hard time. I mean they (BA) only had 1 short haul sector versus the 2 QF long haul sectors.

To me, it seems strange that BA do not offer QF WPs/SGs the extra baggage allowance but then it would appear QF do not offer extra baggage allowances to OW elites.

Yes, your probably right. BA-1 piece for a 2 hour sector, followed by *2, ~10 hour sectors with, up-to 64kg for a WP.

Work that out???

Outbound, take the kitchen sink, coming back, toilet seat only...LOL.

I think that this is where Star Alliance excels. BAGGAGE. They have a uniform rule for elites.

I think that if QF are selling a ticket (from their website) to a sector that they don't service and use a third party airline (BA in this case), QF Club and status members (SG,WP,WP1) should get some sort of leniency...

I guess my question is, l was under the 23kg + QF WP; on a ticket purchased from the QF website, should l be entitled to extra baggage (or pieces?) as per QF rules?

(Maybe l should have read the 'mybookings' sections and looked harder? But after the F-Check in, l thought to myself, 'no worries...')

BA will have there own rules and try to push them regardless.they do provide extra allowances for AA and Iberia elites, but not One World or indeed QF!!If on Club World will get away with it, but if on WT best to have a spare bag that will fit into overhead bin.BA have no restriction on carry on weight as long as you can get it in the bin without assistance!!

This has changed since May.

"Google" for "Most Significant Carrier".

Before that, Agents may have tried to impose BA's allowance at check-in when other flights within an itinerary had higher allowances, but by their own rules this was incorrect: (British Airways - Commitment to Passenger Service)

Free baggage allowance that can be checked into the hold
...

Notes:
i) Passengers will be allowed the most generous allowance on connecting services. ...

OK will remember that for next time.I guess point is BA staff will often try it on when checking in.I had 28 kg travelling Club and attendant said I was over. I commented that my allowance was two bags up to 30kg each, and she just went Oh....OK and let it through (this was BA rule not QF rule).

For those of us that fly with tons of baggage for a living these new rules may help once everyone gets their head around them - or they may just confuse things more.

It certainly doesn't help when after emailing an airline concerning bagagge allowances you get this automated reply - "Please allow a minimum of 10 days for our Customer Service staff to send you a written response where required." - they might make QF's ability to reply to emails look good!

I just got back from a cycling trip Prague to Budapest where I flew in to Prague and out through Budapest. As you would expect the London-Prague and Budapest-London legs were on BA metal but I made a point of ensuing that they were QF code share flights. Total ticket price was on a saver fare and about $2,100 return. At both Perth and Budapest I didn't have a problem with the baggage allowance. I had two bags. One was 15kg and the other 17kg. This was a bike bag and was considered oversized baggage (noting that it was within the dimensions required by Qantas for bike bags). At both Perth and Budapest the check in agent rang their supervisor and had the baggage charges waived (without me having to request them to do so which was a pleasant surprise). I am WP. I found the whole process smooth and easy. I was expecting some problems taking my bike but was pleasantly surprised that there were no problems and that both bags turned up on time, seemingly before others with priority luggage tags and that my bike was undamaged.

Off topic, I had an op up to Business on the Perth-Singapore leg and an upgrade to premium economy on the London-Singapore leg so overall I am very happy with Qantas and feel like I got great value for money considering I booked on a saver fare.
