With all the fuss over the QFF changes thought it worth mentioning that QF's new baggage system is effective in a little over a weeks time, working as a CSA for QF on the first of June should be a lot of fun!

From 1 December 2010 for travel from 1 June 2011
Allowance
Economy 1 piece (maximum 23kg)
Business 1 piece (maximum 32kg)
Qantas Club members 1 piece (maximum 32kg) regardless of travel class
Silver and Gold Frequent Flyers 1 piece (maximum 32kg) Economy 2 pieces (maximum 32kg each) Business
Platinum Frequent Flyers 2 pieces (maximum 32kg each) regardless of travel class

Shouldn't be too much of an issue, it's been advertised for 6 months and customers should know what they have purchased, and still if you have a 32kg bag for a NB member, ends up being alot cheaper.

What i also need to point out with some baggage changes from IATA, if you are on a MEL-SYD-SIN-LHR and SIN-LHR is on BA (for example), your baggage allowance will be the BA baggage allowance, not the QF allowance. So WP/SG/PS/QC extra baggage allowances will not apply for ANY sector.

From what i can understand of the new changes for ALL IATA members.

Piece system versus KG, I beg to differ .

woops, didn't realise this was talking about domestic. thought it was a bit light for international ;)

Oh boy this is going to be mighty confusing. I hope QF clearly explains these rules on their website.

For the itinerary you quote above, if the BA allowance holds and say you travel it in J, that means you're allowed 3 x 32 kg bags (according to BA's website for Club World allowances). Try and check that in at MEL with NGCI at the injectors (will more than likely be rejected or forced to pay for extra allowance).

Plus, if you are overweight:
  • At which port will you be charged the excess weight?
  • Whose rates will apply (supposedly since BA's allowances hold, BA's overweight rates will be used)?

I don't suppose the converse applies w.r.t. QF status bonus allowance - e.g. say you have an itinerary ARN-LHR-SIN-MEL-BNE with ARN-LHR on BA and the rest on QF, all booked in discount Economy. From what I understand QF baggage allowances would apply, however if you are a WP the allowance applicable is 64 kg irrespective of travel class. I can't imagine BA will accept 50 kg of bags without excess charge at ARN (worse still it will probably be contracted agents); as a WP I'd be a bit pi**ed off to have to put up with the allowance of merely a paltry 23 kg for the whole trip.

For most part, the "Baggage" columns in MMB and booking engines have often been unreliable, and with these new rules I expect worse.

Hmmm, wonder how this will work when i have upcoming flights on QF, AA, BA and IB...

CT seem to have given up even trying to figure it out, on my last booking, 12 segments in all, every single one of them states "Contact your carrier".

So if I buy a ticket SYD-LHR, over on QF back on BA. Whose allowance should I use :?:

On QF I get 64KG and according to the website no piece to be over 32 KG and no limit on pieces... On BA I can take 3 pieces of 23 KG which is 69KG...

This is going to be messy

Hasnt this been the case all along? Guess I never paid much attention since I travel light.

Still think ticket prices should allocate how much you can bring on the flight including how much the person weighs.

Why does someone who's fat get to carry the same amount of stuff as me?

Would be an incentive for people to be healthier if it costs them twice as much to travel.

Looking at the following: Automated Carrier Baggage: Passengers to benefit | Aviation Herald

... it's the baggage rules of the "Operating" carrier of the MSC unless the travel originates or has a turnaround point in the USA then it's the "Marketing" carrier's rule.

e.g. (xx) = marking carrier [e.g. QF1 is marketed and operated by Qantas, AA7365 is Marketed by AA and operated by Qantas.]

PRG-(BA)-xLHR-(QF)-SIN then QF rules apply.

SYD-(QF)-xLAX-(AA)-BOS then QF rules apply.

SYD-(AA¹)-LAX-(AA)-BOS then AA rules apply (Due to US DOT exception).

MEL-(QF)-xSYD-(BA¹)-LHR then QF rules apply

MEL-(QF)-xSYD-(QF)-LHR then QF rules apply

I am unable to ascertain whether is per one way journey or the whole ticket.

Qantas Club members 1 piece (maximum 32kg) regardless of travel class

[-]Hmm. What an odd statement. Does this mean that if I am a PS and have a J ticket I'd better not admit to being a QP member else I'll lose one bag allowance?

Why would they specifically have a rule for QP when it seems to me that the other statements in relation to Y and J allowance is already there? Just be be clear??[/-]

Because you can be a QP member and not be Silver or Gold

[-]Yes, I realise that, thus my question. If you are not silver or higher then 1 bag 32KG is your limit. The mention of QP seems redundant.... unless they are trying to head off a feeling of entitlement by QP members, maybe thats it.[/-]

QP members used to get extra baggage, I suppose it's QF's way of trying to make them feel like they still a get something.

Still don't know what your question is. Economy gets 23kg. If you have QP you get 32kg.

Depends if you are flying through multiple carriers on the one day or not and then what luggage is checked through etc.

I've learnt to take a print out of my entitlements with me in relation to luggage and lounge access (thanks to the gospel of Serfty) , because quite often your dealing with people who really dont understand exactly what is what with these often complex systems/arrangements.
