Just been speaking to a close friend. He has lost 2 friends and two are injured.

Said to expect the Australian deathtoll to rise as everything hasn't been accounted for.

While I was talked out of going to Bali this year, I haven't actually written it off completely as somewhere I would go. After all, as we have seen, terrorists can strike anywhere.

A friend of mine (Nick) lives in Bali and writes a blog ( www.baliblog.com ). You can check out his views if you need to go to Bali again soon for any reason, or if you're curious for a local's perspective.

On the other hand places that have constant problems are very low on my priority list. Not sure whether I get into trouble but here are a few to go with Bali. Burma, rest of Indonesia, Cambodia, North Korea, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Gaza, Chechnya, Kosovo, Nicaragua (generally any Cental American country), Venezuela, Bolivia (goalkeepers get shot for not saving goals). I know this maybe seem like a lot of places (and there are probably others I have left off the list) but there are still a lot of beautiful places in this world which I still don't think I will have time to visit all of them.

Why mention Burma? Sure, it is run by a dictatorship government, but in terms of safety for a foreigner, I would say it is a very safe country to travel in.

Purely for the reason you mentioned. Military dictatorship's are not my cup of tea. I don't think that this form of government is very stable and I don't want to be anywhere near them. Cambodia is on that list for the same reason but they also have a real bad reputation for kidnapping & killing foreigners which makes it far worse. If you noticed I mentioned Central America again for exactly the same reasons.

I am sure that it is a wonderful place. I had friends who did a tour 2 years ago and we met up in Bangkok after New Year's. They had mixed feelings about the country.
