Before it’s even been opened, there’s already a proposal to extend Brisbane’s Metro service (“rubber tyre light rail”) from the current terminus at RBWH to DFO and Brisbane Airport.

Probably a fair way off and it’s not funded. I’m guessing this could only proceed when Air Train is back in public hands, in 2036.

The article suggested to me its more of a media stunt than anything substantial with a state Election looming.

The metro will need to be extended to Chermside and Aspley, previously trams used to run to Chermside and now that area is a public transport dead zone, so that should always happen I guess its not a fringe seat it would planning to be built already.

Out to Capalaba could also work, likely some events out at Chandler so a way to get people there would be handy.

Turning the Doomben line into a metro line isn't such a bad idea, that could connect to the new suggested stadium at Northshore.

Note that a train will carry a heap more people.

I honestly think Brisbane need to start using the "metro" for a while to realise its not a great PT solution and not a cost effective long term solution either before thinking about expanding it.

I’m not so sure. Brisbane has a fairly extensive heavy rail network for a city of its size, especially when cross river rail is complete.

The metro is merely expanding on the existing busway system, and while I was a critic in its early years it is actually quite a good system and for buses that run exclusively on the busway it’s as fast if not faster than heavy rail would be, and allows for more decentralised routes on a single service.

In any case with Metro the hard work is already done and would be super easy to convert to proper light rail later on. The original busway was designed for this and they’ve kept that option open with all the expansions.

QLD Rail doesn't have a great track record (pun intended) of completing projects announced prior to Elections.
The Redcliffe Peninsula line was first announced in 1895 and finally opened in 2016.

In 1999 it was announced that there would be a line from the existing North coast line to Caloundra and Maroochydore.
It was dead in 2023 when the feds announced they would no longer fund it. but 2024 is an election year so now it is again being planned. I am confident I will never see it built.
