Anybody else experiencing issues with the new coffee cups used in Qantas Domestic Business ?

IMO they are a disaster. They look stylish compard to the previous mug, but now on 3 recent domestic business flights, no matter how carefully I stir the contents, coffee spills over the sides creating a soggy mess. Definitely a design flaw.
Or is it just me with the problem?

I mentioned this to a crew member who said they didn't like them as they were more difficult to stack/store.

I had them yesterday and didn't have an issue with them.

I agree they'd be hard to stack.

Anyone have a picture?

Are they those slightly angled in, short-and-stout coffee cups like in the F Lounge? Picture of a F Lounge cup shown below:

I've seen these used on Trans-Tasman J before as well.

If they are, then I don't see the big problem, having used them many times, but yes they would be difficult to stack. In saying that, aren't all the cups on board held in a compartmentalised rack so they stay in place, hence the issue of stacking is not apparent?

The only thing is that the cups don't hold a lot of volume. If you're having a white coffee/tea, you might need to have a couple of cups to be content. If you have sugar, you might not be able to stir it vigorously, but a controlled stir in the hot contents should be sufficient; no need to create a storm in the teacup, so to speak.

Hi,

The cups are the same as international standard, to align the product more consistently, and allow the mug to cup to be preset on a tray and fit within the height of the rack space in the cart. Cups aren't in a 'compartmentalised' rack like the glassware, however I have never had any problems stacking it, as the 'rim' on the bottom fits nicely within the 'rim' at the top and can usually stack two or three within a tub on top of each other.

I believe the volume is actually the same, or very very similar, however it is deceiving due to the size/shape of the cup. New cups are now presented on saucers in most cases which of course can account for any slight spillage.

I like them, I find them a bit more user friendly from my perspective :)

As always, be careful and dont burn yourself ;):p

Yes that's the cup!

Oh well perhaps it's just me - as you say creating a storm in a teacup

I've spilled from this cup many times in J lounges... but always thought it was because it was early in the morning and so I was clumsy. I hope it IS a design flaw and not just me!

They have been like that trans tasman for years. I have never had a problem. IF the cup was OVERFILLED then the design would pretty much ensure spillages. I wonder if that was the issue with the OP.

As 737 said.... They are pretty much designed to "stack".

O/T... I can defo say the DOM J class food is getting better. I had the Smoked Salmon and Squid Ink Pasta from HBA-SYD yesterday.... DELICIOUS!!! Then last night +1 had it in J from MEL-AKL.... He was also impressed.

O/T again... but I must remark that that is a mighty bold combination!

I find the new cup awkward to drink out of. If I was chooisng a set of cups to have at home to enjoy my coffee/tea from, it wouldn't be a design that I would choose!

Stylish, yes. Functional? Well, it is Marc Newson

I can agree with you here. I've seen a massive leap in the last couple of flights. The smoked trout I had last month was sensational.

J service to PER on Friday was almost like int J too, also on board the new A330 with 'those' seats.

Those cups are part of the (Newsome designed?) crockery introduced for the 388 inflight product.

I really don't like the plates much because the supporting ridge underneath is quite narrow and if you push away from the centre (as in a cutting action), the plate can easily tip up.

Agreed.

I had the Smoked Salmon and Squid Ink Pasta late last month on SYD-WLG. It was very tasty. I was tempted to skip the meal service as I was quite satisfied from my time in the F lounge but I'm glad that I didn't.

And as for the cups - if they are as per anat0l's photo - then they've been on 737 services to and from CBR as long as I can remember (9/10 of my flights involve CBR as origin or destination). I've never had a problem with them (but I don't take milk with my tea so this may help with the 'overfilling').

Must be a HBA special as we had the same SYD-HBA a few weeks ago. Looked terrible, tasted great !

I too agree the food in J and J lounges is on the improve.

The much touted pizzas are still very hit and miss though (in the QP & J lounge) and suffer from the same affliction the hot food in the QC usually does (ie. lack thereof).

They were Marc Newson designed, at least two years ago, in the pointy end.

Quite stylish IMHO
What I meant was Marc Newson was commissioned create a new design in time for the PLANNED commencement of Qantas 388 operations.

However when the 388 was 2 years delayed Qantas went ahead with the introduction of the new in-flight product anyway.
