Had two rentals over the last week with Europcar and got a brand new Golf with a turbo 4, what a fun little car to drive, if you get offered one take it (I had reserved an I20 so it was a nice upgrade regardless).

Alright the Golf TSi has been added and great on fuel econ.
Got the Audi A1 too...poor cup holders, constantly beeps at you all the time(check seat belts on, when place item on seat?) and middle arm rest is a pain!....Looks good, drives great, Sat Nav not activated yet(too new?)

I just noticed that the Mercedes A class I booked with Europcar for next week has been changed online to a golf... Not sure that is a "similar" car

Tempted to go one of those but been reading the europcar damage wtf thread so starting to change my mind... I guess the ANZ plat insurance can cover a bit.....

As I've posted in another thread (link below), if you have an ANZ Plat Frequent Flyer card, it now covers $5,000 excess, with a $350 excess, so more than enough to cover the $3,850 Europcar excess, even with the additional 20% airport surcharge. Total liability would be $350. I have had a friend claim on the ANZ Car rental cover - it took a few weeks, but otherwise went ok - they paid.

How much does the card cost?
I thought the best option was the ANZ Budget card at $25 a year that had this option?
Does that card still exist?
Need to get this for folks...mind you took 10yrs before 1 X $3850 payment required!

That's good to know. I had a read of the T and C just then and didnt see the bit saying you need to pay with this card to get the insurance but i thought previously it did IIRC.

Its any platinum card. Annual fee for mine is 149 and less if you are with them for mortgage etc or not opt for rewards program.

ANZ car rental cover can be added to any ANZ credit card. But it only covers up to $2400 excess with you paying $350 of that, for $25 a year. The plat package has higher coverage.

I booked an Audi via Europcar and when I turned up they informed me I'd been "upgraded"...to a commodore!!! Ended up with a Golf - perhaps it was different to the one you had markis10 as I was very underwhelmed. Jerky gear changes (auto) and very cheap looking inside.

The DSG transmission isn't all it's cracked up to be. I find Ford's implementation of similar technology (they call it Powershift) to be much smoother.

Interestingly it was better in "Sport" mode. I am perhaps a little spoiled though, we have a brand new BMW 118i with the new gear box and engine - that is IMHO a fine auto gearbox with fantastic and smooth gear changes.
