Just in time for Christmas!

APPLE intends to introduce its latest line-up of iPads on October 22, tech blog AllThingsD cited sources familiar with the company’s plans as saying, meaning Apple would be updating its tablets in time for holiday shopping.

New versions of the iPad, which will go up against Amazon.com Inc’s latest Kindle Fire tablets and other gadgets made by Samsung Electronics, are expected to feature lighter, thinner designs and more powerful processors.
Supply chain sources told Reuters last week that Apple may run into a shortage of so-called “retina” displays for the iPad mini, a smaller version of the tablet that helped popularize the product in 2010. That could in turn limit supply of the gadget during the crucial season.

I'll be interested to see what powers the next-gen mini (as the current gen is a little underpowered) and if the fingerprint sensor makes an appearance or not, as has been rumoured.

Within 2 months of overseas travel for me, may be finally time to update the Gen 1 ipad with cracked screen. Still completely usable so will donate to the brother, but can't get certain apps anymore, and can't update to even OS 6!

iOS 7 you mean? 6 runs fine on the original iPad...

iPad 1 doesn't run iOS 6... It's stuck at iOS 5.
Oh you're right I stand (sit) corrected. My bad.

Apple obsoleted that one quick smart! That said, It's a good thing I pretty much live in the USA; new iPad next week may have to be purchased (I'm stuck on an iPad 2).

I'm hoping that the iPad Mini 2 has a retina screen - one of the reasons I refused to buy iPad Mini 1.

Good to see the mini get a retina display:

In Australia the iPad Air will be available in silver or “space grey” for $598, $699, $799 and $899 for W16, 32, 64 and 128GB storage Wi-Fi models. Corresponding cellular versions will cost $749, $849, $949 and $1049 for the same storage configurations.

iPad Mini will be available in the same colours and Wi-Fi models will cost $479, $598, $699 and $799 for 16, 32, 64 and 138 GB storage configurations, with cellular versions costing $$629, $749, $849 and $949 for the same configurations.

The original iPad Mini will be discounted to $349 and $499 for Wi-Fi only and cellular 16GB models and will offer price competition against the cheaper Android and Windows 8 tablets. -

I have a niece working in oil industry in Houston - Target are running promo - 'Trade in your old iPad for $200 - pay $399 for iPad Air 32G WiFi'.

She had old iPad dinosaur so jumped at it - offer expires Sat. Apparently Best Buys just launched similar offer but she thinks for iPad 2 and newer.

You must not require intelligence in generous amounts to work at my BigW, someone had left the pricing info including their cost for the Apple products in the glass showcase face up, an Ipad selling for $569 costs them $500!

That would be the first time i've seen Apple give away over 3.5% on a product, especially a brand new one, to any reseller.

Not saying you saw wrong, it's just that i've not seen any discount like that before from Apple (there's a reason Authorised Resellers push the Apple Care and accessories; it's where their real money is made).

Maybe a cost pre-GST, post GST $550, which means $19 margin, or about 3.5%.

That would make more sense. I wasn't think of GST so your calculations are about right.

Big W, Target and the like will use these as loss leaders I believe. Not sure what the margin on iTunes cards is, but must be better seeing as most places have a constant discount on them of 15-30%.

Having just acquired one of the new iPad Air's, the price of the mini is a little steep IMHO.

Was considering getting a mini for parents for Christmas, but now it'll just be the regular Air. It's a significant improvement over the iPad 2 that's for sure!
