Have been a long time reader of this forum, short time member. Posting from the Qantas Singapore Lounge. (Yes on an Expedia Brazil fare).
The constant reminder banner has convinced me I should probably introduce myself.

My line of work does involve support of a major airline. The company is pretty is pretty tight on the travel policies however,
so the frequency of travel hasn't been there. Fortunately had a few opportunities recently though.

The recent special on Qantas Club membership prompted me to join up since it was cheaper than work rate. While I might read many would say it's not much to crow about, my wife hasn't been disappointed yet.

Somewhat of an air enthusiast. Have done an introductory flight, and thinking of picking up some Introductory and Advanced Aviation Theory units at my local theory for interest sake. (Just wish they offered them before I completed my degree!) Maybe long term get my private pilots license if the chief of finance signs off on the hobby. Other hobby is bargain hunting. Been to Europe a couple of times now, and never paid more than $800. Often find myself whether paying more at for the pointy end is worth it VS slumming at the back and having more cash to burn at the destination.

My current personal trip started in Melbourne, then to Sydney. Made use of a complimentary Pass to First Lounge and loved the experience every bit. Heading home from our trip in Singapore on QF6, so have another 4 hours or so to over-eat before sleeping it off on the flight back.

Long intro, but hello!

Welcome to AFF Kirky1, I'm hoping my first lounge passes will arrive before my next trip. I'm glad you're making use of the knowledge provided by our community.

Welcome aboard kirky1, I love hearing about people enjoying their trips and will say don't worry what others think. Enjoy the journey and continue travelling.

Glad to see you've already used some of the knowledge here, in time you'll be contributing as a wise old hand.

Hi kirky1 - I'm also getting in to the hobby of bargain hunting for cheap flights :)
I'm curious to know how you have gotten to and from Europe on less than $800. Feel up to sharing?
Though the longer I read the posts on AFF the more I am getting convinced of sitting at the pointy end... ha there goes my penny pinching!

Cheers

Hey pantompharter.

Yes, once I joined AFF I got a bit more serious about the chase FF points and status in the hope of one day getting to the very pointy end.
My allowance for return flights to Europe went up a few hundred dollars. :)

My first trip was to Brussels on Qatar airways. They had specials for their brand new routes to Brussels. Travelled MEL-BRU return for $793. I must say that was my favourite trip so far in Economy. The service was great. Doha airport was a bit average though, but less than 50 mins stopover didn't have much time to worry.

Next trip was on AirAsia X to Paris via KL. Probably my least favourite trip in economy where they have a 3x3x3 configuration instead of 2x4x2.
It wasn't an advertised sale, but just stumbled across some good prices. It was ~$300 return MEL-KUL return and then a separate booking for ~$450 KUL-ORY return. This included meals and baggage. Fortunately we managed to get upgrades to Premium seats with lay flat beds for 3 or the 4 segments at around ~$100 per segment via OptionTown. Those 3 segment upgrades well made up for the overnight KUL-ORY in economy.

Now I just have to wait for QF sale fares to score $1050 return fares to LHR via Expedia Brazil to avoid the excessive fuel surcharge. Booked them for friends, but need to wait for another sale to book for myself. In the meantime its been a couple of $400ish return flights on QF to SIN.

Looks like you got lucky with the Qatar and AirAsia fares... and really lucky with the Optiontown upgrade!
I hadn't come across that website yet. Does it work with every carrier or is it only AirAsia?

I've also been waiting on a QF sale to try and get rid of the fuel.
Though I have also just purchased a bunch of Avianca LM and USDM due to the fantastic combination that the two of them provide in J routing through certain pacific destinations!

Also any tips on cheap domestic travel?

I have been keeping an eye on club jetstar (and their sale tomorrow is fantastic, just wrong timing for us). And also love their 10% price match guarantee.
But just wondering about other options as we often fly PER-BME or PER-MEL and struggle to get these fares under $150 one way. Would love to not have to think about the cost of flying around the country!

Me too, long time reader and recently took the plunge. Breadth of knowledge on offer is too good to pass up! Welcome!
