Hi Everybody,

This is my first post and would like to say a big thank you to all those who have contributed to this site that i have read so far. Here's a little background for anyone that is prepared to take me under their wing in the FF world.

I do not fly frequently for work and hence have only basic status levels in my FF programs (QFF - Red, VFF - Bronze), but do not wish to cram my 6'2 frame into the childrens sized seats of economy.

For the past few years i have been using my Virgin High Flyer card (4 x B1G1F flights popular with my wife) to amass around 260,000 VFF points. Due to my recent loyalty to VA i lost my equivalent balance of QF points through inactivity. From what i have read here it seems that QFF appears to be the better FF program to join and am consider switching preferences back to them on this basis alone (have always had outstanding service with VA, NA and SQ)

After reading several posts on here i decided to sign up to a few credit cards to give my QFF account a good starting off point. the sign up bonuses made the prospect pretty appealing and my experience was this:
Qantas Amex Ultimate - 50,000 bonus points (annual fee for $450)
David Jones Amex Platinum - 30,000 bonus points (annual fee $295)
HSBC Platinum Qantas Visa - 35,000 bonus points (annual fee $199)
Westpac Earth Black - 40,000 bonus points (annual fee $395)

This saw me achieve 155,000 QFF points for the cost of $1,339. At 115 points per $1, this seems like a reasonable one off return. Given a cost of 48,000 points for a SYD-LAX reward seat and cost of $1,502 return. This also included 4 x Qantas lounge passes and a complimentary return domestic flight.

Given my wife and i are travelling ADL-BNE-LAX-LAS-PHX-DEN-SFO-LAX-BNE-ADL next year i would love to hear any advice from members on how to maximse this trip. I plan to use family pooling to upgrade from economy to business for the BNE-LAS-BNE legs (father is VFF Platinum)

On top of this i'm interested in tips to earn easier status upgrades so my overall flying experience is more pleasurable

Help folks!

Which airlines for the USA trip?

If oneWorld (ie QF/AA) then consider buying an AA Admiral's Club pass for lounge access. Check T&Cs though; never used one of these myself - lounge access in USA is a different world.

don't forget you can always call the banks and threaten to cancel your card to see if they will waive the annual fees you have already paid... will bring your cost down :) doesn't always happen but worth a shot anyway!

Also a good idea is to diversify as much as you can so while QF may have more redemption possibilities because of Oneworld, I would keep my Virgin account active also as the best thing about their program is no fuel surcharges unlike QF. I have been loyal to QF and earn most of my points in their program but I have now begun to split and direct some earn towards VA...

Enjoy your trip to the states!

Thanks RooFlyer.

i haven't decided yet. Was always a fan of Southwest and Airtran, but the AA lounge access sounds like a great idea.

Welcome aboard romybeau, sounds like an interesting way to collect points. Many people here do the same so here's hoping you can get the desired flights.

Yes, and the 30 day membership that serfty points out was what I was pointing to on that link :) Forgot the all important distinction between pass and membership.
