New Qantas baggage allowances

I'm personally not bothered by it as I rarely require more than 1 checked bag domestically.

It'd be a different story if they stopped allowing 2 checked pieces internationally however.

For those of us (with *A status but QFNB) who have to get from -say- CBR to meet up with a *A flight ex-SYD (or get home from SYD similarly) it actually seems to be an improvement.

Last time I used QF in that situation (SYD-CBR) I got one free bag.. and was charged $$$$ per kilo for the second...

Under this new system I would have been about $50-60 better off....

Of course now that QF won't interline on that sort of trip anyway the point is moot for the outbound... one day/one way car hire is the best option now for me....

I will consider QF for the return...

For 95% of my trips this is a non-issue. I don't check luggage domestically. On international trips I endeavour to have hand luggage only.

My only issue will be when travelling with mrssimongr and toddlergr (by then though he will be youngboygr)to Cyprus in 2013. I am hoping to be in J though on that trip and not have a large stroller. Last time we travelled we had 7 pieces of checked luggage totalling 87KG. Under the new system if travelling Y+ we will have access to:

In business: unlimited items total weight 128KG
In premium economy: unlimited items total weight 110KG

With those limits I could take dive gear and the weight belt!

This was discussed a lot when the change was first flagged. It is a major disadvantage for anyone who regularly travels with an instrument or sporting equipment, as it means it is now going to cost them if they want to bring some checked luggage and their equipment.
I'm a competitive cyclist and it's not easy to pack everything you need in carry on, as electrolyte powders and liquids are likely to go over threshold amounts in hand luggage. I was really dissapointed to hear the changes, as it effectively means I will compete in less interstate events.

Looks like a nice win for WP International flyers - regardless of your cabin choice.

"All classes: Platinum Frequent Flyers
These mile-munching members score another reward for their loyalty, with the ability to cram up to 64kg of shopping or samples in their checked bags regardless of what seat number is stamped on their boarding pass. It used to be 38kg in economy or premium economy, 45kg in business and 55kg in first – now it’s a solid 64kg across the board."

How I wish I still had WP status just now - heading back to AU on June 6, and could use that 64kg. . . . ;)
