QANTAS has plans to introduce a new system which will cut check-in times in half and dramatically cut the amount of time people spend waiting for their bag once they reach their destination.
The airline’ executive manager Australian sales Steve Limbrick told the Australian Tourism Export Council Symposium in Hobart the project will be trialled within months.
Under the changes, all Qantas frequent flyers and Qantas Club Members will receive their own permanent boarding pass which they can scan and associated permanent bag tag so they will no longer have to stand in line and weigh bags.
"There will be no more going to a belt to drop it off," he said.
But he said bags will still undergo security checks.
"It’s an absolute world first and we’re pushing the boundaries here," he said.
Mr Limbrick said Qantas was planning to trial the system in Perth in July, then roll it out in Sydney later in the year and in Melbourne early next year.
