Hi

I am thinking of doing some shopping in New York and New Jersey (eg the outlet malls) and I was wondering if hiring a car for 2 people would be cheaper than buying a ticket on the shuttle buses.

Does anyone have any coupons/deals readily available for any rental car company in new york (not manhattan) for 24 hour hire, and possibly dropping back at JFK.

Thanks

Doubt you will get a car for 24 hours cheaper than the bus. However even if twice the price it would probably be better value as no time constraints and you can do more than one outlet eg Woodbury Commons + Secauscus outlets or do Woodbury Commons + a tourist activity such as Hyde Park-FDR's home or Kykuit-the Rockefellers home both in the Hudson Valley.
Also not forgetting by hiring a car and dropping back at JFK you dont have to fork out for transport to JFK.
Again try getting a quote on the UK sites of the car rental companies-usually cheaper and include all insurances.

Also having a car means you have somewhere to dump your purchases rather than having to lug them around with you all day.

Another vote for hiring a car. It's a really easy drive to both Woodbury Common and Jersey Gardens and its great to be able to put all your shopping in the car during the day as well as avoiding the huge queues for the bus on the return trip back to NYC. We also like to stop off at a Cheesecake factory on the way back as there isnt one in Manhattan. We usually use either argus or travel jigsaw, last time we only had the car for one day and we were able to drop it back at 9.30pm as the parking garage was open 24 hours with a key drop facility, thus saving us parking fees if we had kept it until the next morning.

Okay, so priceline for the win. Can compare different local hertz's very efficiently. Add a NRMA AAA number and a coupon and its getting really cheap.

Only problem is that the HLE closes at 1pm and the QF flight home is at 6:30pm. Hmm.
