Hi everyone, new to the forum and am glad to have found this while looking up ways to upgrade from business to first class using points for a work trip for syd to london. Does the points upgrade option (currently 73,500 pts) reduce in points closer to the check in date?

Thank you!

You may well be aware but the International upgrade process on QF is a lottery shortly before departure with priority given to higher status members

No, the opposite.
Because there is a great demand for seats, esp in premium cabins, if you don't jump in fast, the points required will most likely go up, so to speak/proverbially speaking.
What is your QFF/VFF/KF status.
Having a lot of points, but low status, puts you down the ladder for upgrades.
Any available seats will go to those with upper status first.
You want to go F, so it would be SQ?
As QF does not have an F cabin on their 787 from PER to LHR.
73,500 points is still quite low, really, some people have hundred of thousands,

You have to backtrack PER - MEL/SYD to get the 380 F, if that is what you want/mean by F.
On the direct QF direct 787 from PER - LHR, J is the highest cabin available.

Check the work trip rules, if you are able to upgrade.

Poochie, you are going to confuse our new member. For starters, OP stated that this ia an upgrade using Qantas points. And that the trip is SYD - LHR so why bring PER into it?

< if you don't jump in fast, the points required will most likely go up, so to speak/proverbially speaking. >

This is NOT correct for a Classic Upgrade Reward. The points cost is set and will cost 73,500 QFF pts, if the upgrade is successful.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm on gold status with Qantas and am fortunate enough to travel once a year to London and a few times to Singapore and HK so I try to book Qantas for all my trips to keep my status at Gold but can't seem to get the elusive Platinum just yet. I've put in for an upgrade for my trip in Feb so hopefully I get it but if not I'm still in business which is still amazing and again fortunate that work has paid for the trip and I'm able to claim the points under my FF.

I've squirreled away about 400k worth of pts so I'm trying to get the best value from them.

Happy new year everyone and safe travels in 2024!

Hey @cloudy - to help you get to Platinum, if you know well in advance the dates for your trips, and you don’t mind waiting a bit to see what happens, you might be able to book those flights when QF has a double status credits offer (usually shortened to DSC on here). These are not a scheduled promotion, but for the last couple of years there has been a DSC promotion in late Feb/ March with a shortish period to make the bookings (about a week from recall) and about 11 months to take the flights. That might help….

Welcome to AFF @cloudy
If you get your upgrade, please let us know, happy travels ✈️
Well the trip is now over and I am happy to report that my request for an upgrade to first class from London Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore was approved! I spent 73,500 pts and it was well worth it. It was as amazing as I thought it would be. I was given the last available seat in first class in 2F aka the Harry Potter seat in the aisle under the stairs.
It was actually pretty cosy and felt quite private and very spacious.

The lounge access at Heathrow and Singapore was awesome, being able to order what I wanted from the menu was amazing And being able to have a shower before boarding a 14 hr and then 8 hour flight was amazing.

Got 2 sets of first class PJs on both legs of the trip back home.

One tip I can give is be super nice to your air steward/stewardess and have some treats for them to share on board, I gave a box of Marks and Spencer's for the team to share. When we are about to land, I was gifted a lovely bottle of champagne to take home with me.
Happy travels everyone!
