Hello, I'm new here and actually live in the States, but interested in learning about earning miles in Australia for my in-laws. Hoping to get them over to visit us a couple more times.

Now, they don't fly a lot, so are there other ways to earn miles? They generally fly Qantas/American, but are flexible. I know there are lots of different ways (cc bonus miles and shopping portals, etc) to earn miles in the States, but not sure about those options in Oz.

I was looking through the first 5 or so pages of threads and they all seemed to be about actual flying and miles, so that is why I was wondering. I hope this doesn't seem like a dumb/weird question.

Thanks.

If they shop at Woolworths and its partners then they can use the Everyday Rewards program to earn Qantas FF points over a certain spend. Bonus offers are also offered.

depends really on where they are flying in the states maybe and what class they fly. If they fly economy then there are some cheap fares offered by all the airlines, at the moment Delta is offering $999 to the west coast ex AU, and a few dollars more to over 250 cities in the USA. You'd have to look and see how that compares to QF, which the lowest I've seen is about $1370. So if there are two flying that saves almost $800, which would require an awful lot of points to make up for!

If they are flying business class then there are fares for around $3000 return on Air Pacific business class to the westcoast. You'd need to compare how that goes with someone like QF/AA.

Gaining status for them might be difficult with just a couple of trips to the USA. You might want to invest in a Qantas club membership for one of them (they can take in the other as a guest). I think 1st year is about $800, after that about $500. That would get them lounge access in Australia, and all USA locations where there is an admirals club and/or Qantas club.
