So with our new obsession and great information from this great resource, I received my Velocity Amex and my wife is awaiting her's. It seem there are a lot of bills that I can't pay with American Express and I believe there can be some charges involved when using it. Anyways I was planning on getting another card what would the good people here advise as the best card to get for another points bonus and best point conversion rate

Thanks for the feedback

suggest getting the citibank signature card. 60K sign up bonus and then after 1 year ask if they can provide it fee free for life as that's what your friend was able to sign up to a few years ago and recommend the card to you.

Works out as 1 to 1 on velocity and sq, or $49 a year fee for QF. Also earn the equiv of 2.66 SQ and VA points on non AUD purchases which can help ease the pain of the forex charges.

Thanks Jeffrey its a toss up between Citibank signature and the Virgin money high flyer, I think the point rate with the high flyer is 1.25, trying to decide between the two

Depends if SQ is of interest to you. If so then the CB card wins slightly in the transfer rates, otherwise the Virgin card wins if velocity is your preference.

If you a lot of FOREX spending the CB card could also help you reach you goal quicker.

Check to see if you can use PayPal. This often provides a way around AMEX not being accepted OR coming with a high surcharge,

Further to this, Post Bill pay accepts both Amex & Paypal now. But probably better to do Paypal in order to get the full 1:1 points.

Mmm, I'm thinking of giving up my last points paying VISA/MC (the woolies one) as its rubbish now and too costly for the benefit it provides, have a couple of other VISA cards that are free but don't earn to cover those 'emergencies' when Amex _really_ isn't accepted. Otherwise I'm going to try a lot harder to only use Amex - which will change my spend habits a little. There seems very little choice in VISA/MC land for decent earn and relatively low cost, not really interested in another 300-500$ a year VISA style card that offers little else than 1(ish) points/$ when the Amex suite outperforms on pretty much every level.

Over here in Perth I've been very happy with acceptance recently - even a lot of the small family owned type restaurants and cafes have started accepting Amex - must have been a recent push by the reps to get acceptance up. Petrol, Supermarkets, hardware, parking, cafes, restaurants, car servicing & tyres, hotels, flights, clothing and related - all covered by Amex. Even some of my suppliers are now accepting Amex without a charge .. so they will gain more business at the expense of those who don't.

I used to pay the ATO on the Woolies card, but with the ridiculous 2500$/month 'cap' on decent points earn now its a bust, so I cop the fee and pay with Amex now, the fee is deductible if you play the game correctly and its probably an even proposition in my view .. not really an earner but about even.

Beware Citibank. I got a card on a promo sign up. 70k QF points. I had to call them EVERY month for 5 months, asking where my points were. Every month they told me "they will post next month" and every month -NOTHING. It was only when I started tweeting them publicly about their dreadful service, that they actually did anything. Points posted 3 days ago.

There is an offer of 40K points on the High Flyer (see credit card promotions thread, it doesn't seem to be targeted as I first thought). The $10K spend in 3 months is pretty hefty though

Are you sure about this ? I have just looked and all it will accept is Visa and MasterCard ?? Am I looking on the wrong site ?

Well blow me down !!! \
I just looked online and it has PAYPAL there, had not seen it before.
I pay heaps through Australia Post Billpay and have my Amex Card linked to my Paypal Account so will need to give it a try and see if it goes through. If it does then 1.5 points per $ 1 here I come

Yes Heg I've had the same experience with Citi and the bonus points! Did you end up getting them in the end?

Clive005, I assume you've moved onto the Jetstar offering and the new Cth Bank offering by now.

How many points have you managed to accumulate over the last 3 months?

Hi Dr I went for the Virgin High Flyer, almost up to the 10k required spend for the bonus 30k points I have around 160k point not including the 30k bonus to come and the wife has about 110k so doing ok. Enjoying the point hunting.
I haven't heard about the Jetstar offering

the Jetstar offering is for 40k QFF points, if your after velocity points the new NAB offering of 60k velocity points,
would be a better deal for you.

That NAB deal is really very good. A good card, too.
