Hi all,
Last week I had a flight CNS to Goldcoast, checked in online arrived at the airport approx 1hour before departure time. flight time for departure was 2.55pm
I decided to have a small coffee and snack at the Coffeeworks restaurant. at the food court section, there are no monitors for flights departures or arrivals information near the food courts for travelers (no they are way back on the other side ) So I rely on boarding announcements, well I heard alot of announcements for Sydney Melbourne, but not Goldcoast, I checked my time and saw that it was now 2.35 still no annocment for boarding and was browsing the net on the free Wifi checked my time again and saw that it was 2.55 still no boarding annoncement, went to the boarding gate no one there screens were blank, walked way over to the outerside to check the screens my flight had departed, !@#, went to the JS counter and asked why wasnt a final call made or call my name, she said that it would have been made but the staff member was asian and probably didnt prononce my name properly, what the !@# ... She offer next morning flight or flight to Brisbane that arvo for $50 leaving in 45 min, I took it plus paid another $30 for the airtrain to GC what a pain this whole experiance was. I was told by another traveler that if I had check-in luggage they would have definitely made boarding calls saves them time to remove the luggage from the plane. Maybe next time I will do that, lesson learned.

Unfortunately I believe it's your responsibility to present yourself for boarding before the time prescribed by the airline unless they tell you otherwise.

In the case of JQ the door is meant to close 15 minutes before departure.

Sounds pretty awful and unfortunate. But I never rely on announcements even in the lounge. If I can’t see a monitor about the time I expect to board (a few minutes before really) I go find one.

Cairns airport is a bit of a zoo. I’d easily miss an announcement.

Check in luggage means they need to off load luggage so they do need to find you if possible.

As no doubt most here will agree, to sit in an airport somewhere you cannot see the "screens", and not even check the gate until AFTER the scheduled departure time, is unfathomable.

Never, ever, rely on boarding calls. In many airports none are even made.

You appear to have learnt your lesson - good! :)

In such situations, a check with staff no less than 20 minutes before departure to see what's happening is essential when travelling.

Other than that, the rebooking offer (next day, zero) is surprising for JS - so perhaps they realised there had been no call.

Still, NEVER rely on a call.

Yes, JS did recover that very well.

I don't fly JQ that often but I've experienced the no boarding calls. I always make sure I'm near the gate early.

The Jetstar Cairns staff are amazing compared to the rest of the Jetstar network.

I had a connection Tokyo-Cairns-Brisbane and the Tokyo to Cairns flight was delayed 24 hours (long story cut short JAL maintenance couldn't fix it before Narita's curfew and due to onward connections they decided a 24-hour delay was best).

When I arrived in Cairns (24 hours late) I needed to be on the Gold Coast asap and as both the Brisbane and Gold Coast flights were leaving at the same time they agreed to switch me to the Gold Coast flight (free of charge), gave me an exit row seat and offered to check my cabin bag for free (I hadn't paid for any baggage) with the warning that they'll be weighing everyone's bag at the gate.

I never, EVER rely on boarding calls and I treat screen times with caution, especially if the gate is far from the lounge. I just don't like having that sort of stress - and I will stress if there's a risk I may miss the flight.

Not sure the ethnicity of the agent is all that relevant. Some of these final calls sound like "Qantas is paging passenger blah, passenger blah and passenger blah" where only the blah surname is hollered and is so indistinct and harsh you'd have trouble deciphering it in the noise of a terminal even pronounced exactly as intended.

Quite some time ago in the AA F lounge at LAX and announcements were being made. Next time I looked up, my flt had departed. Luckily, I was a WP at the time and was rerouted. She said, 'we don't make announcements'. I answered, 'well yes you do you've been making them the whole time. ' She answered that it was only for JFK, and I said well sorry, I didn't know that and went off to get to JFK via DFW.

I know this is off topic but if you were in the QP and the monitors says now boarding but they have not yet made any boarding announcements on the PA, would you head to the gate or sit and wait for the boarding announcement?

I've been caught out a few times where the monitor says boarding but when I get to the gate they haven't even started boarding. Then again I don't want what happened to the OP to happen to me.

We were just talking about this the other day. The made announcements in the Mel Lounge that a flight was boarding so hurried along and they hadnt even started. I think its a way of clearing a crowded lounge meself ;)

Could well be but I hate the opposite where they make the call in the lounge so late you are almost the last person to board.

Yes, I wonder where the cue for the announcement comes from. Dislike being the last to board with hand luggage.

It 100% comes from the gate staff. Lounge has no say.

To make things easier, just get to the boarding gate the the stated boarding time!

To me, that is the perfect way to board. Relax in the lounge until required on the plane. I spend enough time in the metal (or composite) tubes, that the less time I spend in them the better.

With my track record of continual delays and very infrequent updating of the departures boards should I just head to the gate at original boarding time and wait until they're ready or be afforded the luxury of being able to board when they are actually ready to board?

Flying MH on Monday and got the message that the flight was boarding. Checked the acreen to confirm then walked to the gate. The inbound aircraft hadn't even landed yet
