Does anyone know the reason that VA isnt offering business class to their northern nsw ports (coffs harbour, ballina) as i just went to buy a reward flight and am unable to. Just a tad disappointed.
also this is my first aff post:D

No market and there is a good chance it changes to turboprops soon. Welcome to AFF!

i dont think we'll see turboprops to ballina for some reason...it's a market that competes directly with jetstar, a market that is primarily a leisure market and focussed on lower-cost fares. business people choose to fly rex, so virgin will neither change to turboprops (unless it starts double-daily flights in the aim to compete with rex - a small market as it is given the recent change in schedule) as such, virgin also will not likely offer business class as a major feature on their ballina flights. the lack of frequent flights mean business people in the region are likely to go to the gold coast for flights (and i know of a few people from the region that will do just that, whether business people or otherwise).

now in terms of coffs harbour, these services are operated by e190 aircraft, which arent all installed with business class yet (note that hervey bay also doesnt have business class on sale - nor do albury, rockhampton or launceston out of sydney..). there is potential, given that the competition is qantaslink q400 aircraft, that props will start on the route (PLEASE bring back the early-morning service from sydney!!) this could be why business class isn't being sold. but then again, it's likely just because there's no business-class equipped aircraft operating on the route.

Ballina to SYD on an ATR is very cost effective, the lack of a J alternative means its more likely to happen! Your argument re J does not hold water when you look at SYD to CBR, so it's not going to fly up north either, JQ operate Jets because they have no choice, which is also why they could not make ROK work.

Rex is the J alternative (or close to it - free checked bags, flights timed for business travellers, free food inflight, lounge facilities available etc). If you consider that Virgin is successfully operating 737 flights up to Ballina, with most times I've travelled on the route being on a full 737-800, they would need to have at least three daily ATR flights to meet the existing demand (again, primarily leisure demand...) - would that really be more cost-effective than a single 737 flight? True, Jetstar couldn't make Rockhampton work..but they seem to be making Ballina work with a double-daily flight at present to Sydney and 4 times weekly to Melbourne. Best thing for Virgin in the Ballina market would be to instigate a morning flight to complement the afternoon flight - now whether this means it's 2 E190 flights or a 737 and an ATR is open for question..but Ballina is past the stage of being a minor market really given the number of seats now in the market.

Coffs market could sustain (and it would be ideal too) a third daily flight (there's STILL community upset over the changing of the morning flight to middle of the day). Now you could make this an ATR, keeping two E190 - or make all 3 flights ATRs...and the Melbourne flights? Well why not add a weekday flight and make both E190??

Anyways, the point is - neither market is really all that strong in need for J class seats.

So there are going to be 737's that aren't fitted with business or will the business seats just go to gold, plat and flexis?

Jousams, I'm thinking that the route may go to E190s OR...yes it might just go to Golds, flexis etc.

My understanding is that the ZK Fleet is staying in its current all Y Config. Nothing stopping DJ from sending these aircraft on these routes. Would allow them to save on crewing cost as well (ZK 738's only need 4 Cabin Crew).
