Recently I flew to JNB on First. Cant fault the service and trip. I wanted to book J class but there were no Classic award seats. Can anyone explain, why Qantas will fly all those empty J seats but not release them to Classic awards even 24 hours before departure??

Totally Guessing - my thought would be if there were no paying customers in J, but paying in F - then no point having just the Award tickets in J... or to that effect ;-)

Yeah if literally the whole J class was empty they could save by not having to load food / beverages and (presumably) not have to staff the J cabin.

There was only 1 other PAX in F and about 10 PAX in J class. a scan of teh QF FF web engine always shows the same, never and J class award seats on this leg?

Was the same when I retrunrned from LAX in February in F Class . I couldn't get a J class seat on classic awards but there were plenty of empty seats in J class?

United States legacy carriers have "space available" upgrade for their elites so it's not often that a First / Business Class seat go unused.

This has become so entrenched that many of their most frequent fliers strategically book the cheapest economy fares but generally travel up front. This has lead to a degradation of premium cabin service on the USA legacies.

I am referring to Qantas. Still doesnt explain the empty J class seats (which I understand are always) on the SYD/JNB route from those who fly it but never appear in the QFF web booing engine as available?

So was Serfty. It is called yield management. If QF believe they can sell the seats they won't be release them for classic redemption.
QF wish to avoid the space available situations as in the US where people do not pay for the premium cabins

QF codeshare on with many different airlines and on this flight SYD/JNB it codeshares with South African (SA) . Each agreement is different depending on the needs of each airline. In this case I can tell you that SA have the allocation of seats (the number I dont know) up until departure time and even if not sold QF is unable to use them regardless. This means that QF works out what seats it has available for both sale and frequent flyer seats based on what seats it has available on that day. So the 10 spare J/cls seats you refer to would have more than likely been those not sold by SA and that QF had used up its own allocation of seats.

Thanks aoz48x I am sure that is a valid point for code share legs. Maybe QF might look at how many seats go unused on code share and grab some back to sell at Classic awards. at least they can make some "money" rather than flying with no bums on these seats. Woul dbe nice if QF closed their Ards bookings 1 hour before flight time like Velocity/Virgin. That may well open up mor echance for a classic award if you are flexible in when you can go

AFAIK Qantas do not carry outstanding FF points as a liability on their books, so (from an accounting perspective at least) a FF redemption seat would actually cost them money (in terms of catering, etc).

Re: No J class Classic seats, on SYD/JNB, so I booked First. The whole J class was em

The point is that QF gets paid by SA for using these seats regardless if there is a bum on the seat or not. For QF to then re-sell them as an award seat would be double dipping. So while QF are many things in this case they are playing within the rules, whether they or you like it or not.

What I was trying to illustrate is that if Qantas were in the habit of making every unsold seat available for upgrades then less people would actually PAY for these premium seat with $$$'s (as they'd have a better chance of being upgraded).

This is irrespective of code sharing such as the JNB flights.

an example would be QF code share with BR from BRE-TPE. QF is only allocated 4 J seats out of 24.
