I'm in row 19 on the a380 to LAX and went to move a little further forward but no new seats are available at all. In fact everything near me has vanished. Did I just miss my opportunity? It's t-60 or so I suppose (wow I'm 24 hours late- that was a bit silly)
And why aren't 24a etc taken? Aren't the exit rows popular in this J cabin?

Edit: I have no reason at all to move my seat and am doing this out of curiosity to understand the system better. I am curious to know what the exit seats are like but feel a little guilt at five foot nothing using them.

It might simply be full.

I also wouldnt worry about taking the exit row on the A380 given the J seat pitch is 80 inches...

I will echo what Simon said. I have seen it before where the system will only let you have your allocated seats. The flight was chockers, but I was able to get the folks moved to a slightly better seat that had been Q-blocked.

In relation to zoned seating, T-80 does not appear as relevant for international flights.

Being a PS you are not likely to see a seat further forward available until maybe check-in, if then.

I logged on ( as my NB daughter)at exactly T80 for QF1, a few weeks ago. She had completely awful Y seats before this with everything good blocked. Was able to move her and siblings from row 64 to 40 :D
Mysteriously by the next day the surrounding seats in rows 41-43 were blocked again ( and the back rows with only 2 seats at the side) and remained so ever after.
My theory (which could of course be wrong) is that there is a window at T80, hours/minutes I'm not sure ?
YMMV

id also like to understand how these work better..

in my experience,if the flight is full, the system becomes very weird for Silver QFF...as Gold it is slightly better but not much...

seems like the only people who can select good seats whenever they like are the Platinum members

Flying QF31 tomorrow in J.

We are both NB, best seats I could choose when we booked were 22A and B, and there were about 6 other seats to choose from, none further forward.

At T80 the only seats available for selection were ours and 22J and K.

Today there are no other seats showing as available.

Would love to move further forward, and will try at checkin.

Thanks Serfty,

This will be only our second J flight.

Assuming no changes, would it be worhwhile to try and get to 16JK?

You'd be fed earlier ... are you going to SIN or LHR?

Unfortunately only SIN this time for a few days, and then to HKG.

I have read that they give out PJ's on this flight.

Do you have to ask for them?

Any other tips on how best to renjoy this J experience would be appreciated.

I went into our booking this morning to check on seat selection for todays QF31.

As of yesterday there were no other vacant seats for me to choose than 22 A B.

To my surprise 11E F were showing as available, so I grabbed them.

Very happy.

Interestingly seats are opening and closing intermittently in the lead up to the flight. A bassinet bulkhead in the main business cabin just opened, perhaps they read AFF and worked out it can be loud there. I've reluctantly given up my window seats for aisle access in the middle seats. Will miss the view of Sydney harbour but 14 hours of the Pacific isn't really worth being penned in.

They usually only give out PJ's for the SIN-LHR leg, but ask anyway.

Had a great flight.

After dinner slept for about three hours and only woke up because the man in the next seat was snoring loudly.

Asked for PJ's and were given 2 pairs, one for me and one for the wife.
FA told me to be discreet with them.

J was completely full.

It has been said on this forum many times that after a taste of J it is difficult to go back to whY.

I now understand what they mean.

Just have to chase points harder from now on.

Only problem
