Have a QF17 flight SYD-EZE next Sat. Had previously seat selected 37A (as QF Gold) on both outgoing and return legs (booked econ) but upon checking today outbound flight no longer has seat selection option. And I no longer have a seat allocated. E/F shows the seat as available!

Is that normal? (ie. seat selection is no longer available 1 week before flight?). Or is it indicating a possible change in aircraft servicing the route? Usually is a 4-class but currently being sold as 3-class flight with J access to F seats, Y+ access to J seats, Y access to Y+. Or is it suggesting possible op-up? ;)

Should I phone QF to "re-select" my previously selected seat?

Dont waste time talking to us, call em before you lose your seat.

So I call up the QF desk and they tell me there's been a change in aircraft to a 747-400. Huh? I thought it already was?? Then I explain to her it's a 4-class aircraft being sold as 3-class with J getting access to F seats, etc., She couldn't really explain other than I can only get seats for the cabin I booked in. So I am now seated in 54K vs 37A. And I can't change seats online through their "select seats" function. Other than thinking their Y+ cabin is now full (E/F showing it's not, with 37A also empty) I'm guessing ticketed passengers are now being put back to their respective cabins. :(

Of course, YMMV.

It sounds like the aircraft has changes as advised. If the configuration has changed then the seating may well have been reset.

Good luck.

A check of E/F for that flight for Sat 20/03 shows that PE is in the PE cabin - i.e. rows 34-39. Economy starts at row 51. Still looks like a 4-class, but business in now using F cabin and all business cabins.

:( Looks like J filled its F cabin and upper deck allocation and takes back the business cabin that was previously allocated to Y+. Meaning Y+ goes back to Y+ cabin and Y passengers stay in Y cabin. So it wasn't so much as a aircraft change, but more to do with releasing more J inventory... Same flight on other dates show passengers still eligible for seating in higher cabin.

Clear case of YMMV. Fingers crossed I keep the Y+ seat on return flight.

Turns out Y was oversold and got back into selected 37A seat. E/F had been showing low levels of Y inventory in the days leading upto departure so there was always a chance of getting pushed back up. The guy seating next to me had purchased last minute Y fare for ~$3500 and managed to get check-in to push him up a cabin.

Also got a lift into town from his girlfriend who picked us up at airport, plus she negotiated a 10% discount on nice studio apartment - always interesting to see what a bit of small talk can get you. :p
