Just a heads up for anyone who may have been booked on VA252 (early CBR to MEL flight) in late December....... that flight has been cancelled. I only noticed it today, when I made an unrelated booking, saw something odd with my CBR - MEL - AKL booking, and thought, "WTF?"

Long story short, we're now flying down to Melbourne the night before, and incurring the cost of a night's stay in Melbourne.

I recall that VA really cut back on CBR flights during the December/January break a few years ago (i.e. when parliament is not running). Looks like a similar thing is happening here. It's annoying, but not too much you can do about it (other than fly QF!).

These are some J award seats that I booked a few months ago, when VA were offering a 15% bonus on points transfers from various credit cards, and a 15% discount on redemptions. Made QF look rather pricey.

With the cancellation of VA252, our options became.....

  • A refund of the points and taxes paid.
  • Fly via SYD, but with both legs in Y.
  • Fly via MEL and BNE, departing the previous day, and arriving in AKL on the scheduled day, but at stupid-o'clock in the morning.
  • Fly down to MEL the night before.
