For me I think it comes down to how cold it is and how deep the snow is. Personally I have never had an issue walking on firm, shallow snow in sneaker-type shoes because it’s unlikely to get in, melt and make my feet wet. But if it’s deep and soft then obviously that would be an issue and I’ll go for some sort of boots. And super cold I want something heavier duty. Having something waterproof/resistent would be my main criteria. Just my opinion though and Im sure other people may see things differently.
