If I want to book an instant upgrade fare on AA.com can I later cancel it and credit against another fare or re-schedule the original fare or both or neither ? Thanks in advance and apologies if it's been covered previously as I haven't been able to find it.

I don't believe so. But to be honest, I'm really not sure!

However, you can view the extremely extensive fare rules once you've chosen the flights but before confirming payment. Click on 'View Fare Rules' in blue type. Good luck deciphering them.

It depends upon the fare rules of your booking. Most are non refundable and have USD150 change fee (+ fare difference) for keeping the same origin and destination. I was looking at a couple and I see no provisions for reuse of remaining credit for a different booking.

I had to cancel 2 KUP7s (I believe it was) over the phone and they very clearly said that I could use it as credit with a change fee, I think the $150 that was mentioned. I didn't know if I would ever have the opportunity to use it, so I may have insisted on a full cancellation so I could claim it on travel insurance.. Still awaiting all the documentation that goes with it :( Hasn't been that long though and they're busy sorting through bankruptcy..

I'm guessing you'd have to contact an actual person to do it for you but beyond that I can't help you :D

If at all possible, avoid cancelling anything, if you make a booking, try and change it over cancelling it.

I have made no less than a dozen changes to KUPP bookings in the past 12 months (A & P fare buckets)

All were either change of dates (same flight sectors) or same date but re-routing.

No charges or fees have ever been applied

An example of such, my most common sectors in the US are LAX>DFW>CMH (a good little earner btw, especially when it was closer to $600 (now approx $700)) I would bring them forward or push back a day.. no problem

Or, due to time restrictions, I may have booked CMH>ORD>LAX and due to a higher then normal risk of bad weather (mainly in Winter) I would change the routing from ORD to DFW… again, no charges (obviously I check online first to ensure fare buckets are still available).

I have asked about cancelling a sector all together, and was told there would be charges/fees applied… when that happened, I just used it as a MR and flew back on a dirt cheap Q fare and booked the flights I wanted a few days later

I am not sure if status (Emerald) helps with this, or I have just been lucky

What you can also do is grab the seats & book them but select the "hold" function so you don't have to pay immediately then that gives you time to read through the conditions.

If you're happy with them then simply go ahead & pay for it otherwise just do nothing & the pnr with autocancel.

Make sure you have already taken out a travel insurance policy prior to paying for the KUPP's. If you have an annual policy eg thru Amex Platinum all the better!
