Booked on QF128 Prem Econ on Wed 26th Oct 2011 but when on Qantas website I can only select aisle or window. I'm WP and thought I would be able to select my seat. Any ideas why I can't select my seat ?
I'm flying prem econ and was trying to get best seat - any advise on this welcome as well ?!?

It's probably oversold. Have you checked the fare bucket loadings?

I dont have access to Expert Flyer so any help would be useful - if oversold fingers crossed for OPUP !

A seat map shows 29 of the 32 PE seats already pre-allocated and threee blocked.

Business class is nearly empty downstairs, chockers uptop. First has one seat preselected.

EF is reporting F4 A4 J9 C9 D9 I9 U1 W8 R6 T2 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G0 E0, so not oversold in any class by the looks of it...

btw - you can get to flight availability through seatcounter.com which is free but does have limitations on the number of queries you can run per day (although it is down for maintenance at the moment)

Back to the subject at hand, I have seen this - on and off - for the past year. Some flights will not allow me to make seat selections, in those cases, I use other tools (OTR) to make the seat selections. Keep checking though as I have seen the maps appear after previously failing. No idea why though....

hmmm, you're right Serfty. I had mistyped the date and had the 27th instead. Sorry for the confusion. Still not looking oversold though.

In actual fact, PE seems well oversold. All 32 seats are either pre-selected (29) or blocked (3). (see seatmap Below)

I posit that QF are selling Skybeds at PE prices.

If this is the case, a WP booked in PE would have a somewhat greater than the normal miniscule chance of finding themselves traveling in a SkyBed I (via an "opup"/"Involuntary Upgrade").

yes don't forget that EF only shows you what the airline is still selling. They are not showing you the actual loading list. In this case PE is oversold but QF is still selling the seats, probably in the hope people don't show up and they can always opup some people to get seats.

I suggest that Yield Management have well and truly oversold PE in an endeavour to maximize revenue for the flight.

A seat map shows 13 First Class and 15 Skybeds seats selectable and 8 skybeds blocked but not allocated. That's between 18 and 26 seats still to be sold for PE/J/F premium fares.

One day out and they'll take what they can get.

(Also, many of those in PE/J with points upgrade requests are likely to be successful.)

Thanks all - keeping my fingers crossed for a skybed ! Will report to let you know what the outcome was.....
(ps tried again today and still cant select seat so looks like oversold could be the reason.)

Please do let us know. The last time (well, the only time) international seat selection stopped working for me I was bumped from disc-Y to J (seat 1A NRT-MEL) on check-in.

Checked again this morning and could select 34J - at airport got bp for 34J so now just can hope for beep at gate...... Another wine in Wings lounge might soften disappointment :-)

Nope - no upgrade! PE cabin was full and still empty seats in Y and J so maybe no need to opup people. On diff note maybe should start post on "How annoying it is if people treat he canin as a pub!". Obviously lots of people in PE travelled together and as soon as seatbelt sign was turned off they all stood near eachothers seats blocking the aisle for the FAs and ordering drinks in the process! I felt (as one of the few sitting in my seat) that I was sitting in a pub! All settled down a bit when they were fed.......
