Hi all,

I am a WA lad who isn't really a frequent flyer, but would like to be (don't travel for work at all). More so I am here to try and understand the process around redemption flights, best seats, best way to travel around the world etc.

I have enough points to get my family of three to and from LA in economy but this seems like a waste so thats another thing I am trying to wrap my head around here. There is just so much information

Welcome aboard simbot82. Lots of people here aren't frequent flyers. They're in the same boat as yourself wanting to learn how to most effectively use their points etc.

You're in the right place and as you learn about various tricks you can share your experiences to aid others.

Flying has become a lot more complicated for a person who is obsessive to detail such as myself .

I want short flight times, stop overs every max 12 hours, upgrades using points if I can, access to flight lounges for short stop overs (eg the lounge in Dubai), sign up to credit cards for points bonuses

I love a bargain

Lots of us here wouldn't "belong" if travel for work was a requirement, There's nothing wrong with maximising your comfort and pleasure when flying for leisure.

Oh, and occasionally, you get to vent a little at the various perceived injustices of the "system".

I joined here as a curious bystander and thanks to the generosity of all the contributors here I have since become a Gold frequent flyer! It is certainly complex and I would have not been able to figure it all out on my own. Good luck with spending your points in the best way that suits

Welcome - I am in the same boat. Don't travel for work, only leisure, and love cheap flights almost as much as I love business class. Don't be surprised if you become an expert after a few weeks. Personally with points I do the same thing my parents do - buy economy & use points to upgrade to business (though they buy business and upgrade to first) and in my exp. have found that the best way to get value out of the points while the pleasure of business class. Good luck and enjoy your trip! (and if you got with virgin make sure you set up family pooling before you go!)
