Note: if you book a multi city from eg: AKL - SYD - MEL, note that the SYD - MEL domestic sector will be in Y ie economy

Just noticed that QF/QFF are smart now, as in the title, looking at flights from AKL - SYD - MEL, noted that the tag domestic sector is in Y, so less QFF points earnt, and less QFF SC earnt as well.
Looks like they have caught on to us.

Even AKL - ADL, via MEL, on the same PNR, the tag domestic flight, MEL - ADL, is also in Y.
A real let down in service from days of old, where if you paid J, or subclass of J, you had that for the whole journey.

I'm sure the price reflected the economy leg also. surely it's not a case of paying for Business and being put into Eocnomy??

Even on a non multi city booking "tool" on their website, on some sectors, you or the flyer will be in Y.
But, if I were to book, ADL - MEL/SYD - AKL, all sectors will be in J.
Go figure.
For lounge access, of course we all know that all we have to do is show the previous BP that was int J, and get access to the transfer city's J lounge, to shower, or get something more to eat, but my gripe, is more so the seat on the dom sector.
Even on a J sale, some "coming home" sectors are in Y, it seems mainly on the coming to your home city tag flight, on an int - transfer city - home city flight.
But ZL have very cheap J seats, so might do them instead, for east coast city back to ADL, if one sector is in "Y".

For this:
31/03/2024

Dep AKL 6.30am
Both QF J fares are showing $990, J sale and J saver
Both asking for $990
First one, under J sale, for the tag sector flight, its the dreaded your flight will be in Y.
But on the next column, also priced at $990, the tag sector flight is in J!
On the other hand, on some J flex, also it shows your flight is in Y,

I’ve been noticing this for several months when searching for CBR-AKL. Some of the domestic connections are on Dash 8s with no J class, but even connections where J is available are booking into Y. And even if you choose the most expensive Business Flex option. Sometimes it just won’t let you book into J on the domestic leg no matter what.

The last time this happened, I gave up on trying to get around the QF website and just booked a different airline.

I booked CHC-ADL on points a few months ago didn't care whether it was CHC-SYD-ADL or CHC-MEL-ADL. QF site refused to select a direct domestic J flight to ADL, instead it routed 2 domestic legs through SYD-MEL-ADL. Talk about great customer service? Wonder whether the new CEO can get their routing engine cleaned up to save them money and provide better customer service.

If the 2 dom sectors are J, its not all that bad.
If one of those was Y, I would fume, quietly mind you, as a screaming fit at an airport will only a person further into trouble.
Unless QF spends a lot of money, things will not change under the new CEO.

True, we'll probably be home in ADL around the same time, and will have experienced the "delights" of SYD and MEL QF business class lounges.

After all, you have paid for the points via QF previous flights, or via card spends, so you might as well use the the "free" J lounge visits to the full.
Great to hear that both QFd flights are in J, even if they swap you to Y, you can at the least get the SYD QFd J lounge entry, as your incoming flight from NZ will be in J, so you can show them the BP.
The flight from MEL - ADL, might be in Y, knowing QF, anything can happen, at least now it shows J.
"Due to operational, safety and security reasons, seats might need to be changed..." that blah, means they can still change your seat, or plane.
Best of luck, and hope its all J in the end.
The QF side of works, that they were doing in Dec last year, in the QFd T1 zone/side, should have finished by now, it might look a bit as "modern" as the combo T3 and T4, grin, modern yes, but what a zoo its down that far end.
Hope the QF side will be better, I will have a look see in Dec, when I pass MEL T1 again.

This problem happens with Perth all the time, whether searched as a one way, return, or multi-leg booking on the QF website.

In the case of Perth, it's not just Trans-Tasman bookings, either - I get it when looking for itineraries from North America, too. Things like YVR-SYD(J)-PER(Y), or YVR-SYD(J)-MEL(J)-PER(Y). Sometimes these itineraries price cheaper, sometimes they're the same as a full J itinerary sold at OTAs, so I end up booking there.

I assume the only work-around while booking directly with QF is to book over the phone?

If you are lucky to be WP/P1 or CL, and can get your call answered in HBA.
If lower grade, you might get told what you see is all what they see, and they cant sell it as all J.
Instead of J, if lucky you might get shadow on the 737, sometimes I have had a whole row of 3 to myself on the 737, in re to QFd ADL flights!
