I'm sure this is new...

If you look at a booking booked through the Qantas website or Qantas TravelSales (Apparently containing any a Qantas flight and departing from Australia) there is now a new button for "Cancel Booking".

If you cancel the booking, then it is converted into an online voucher that can be redeemed later for another online booking of higher value.

I don't have any flights I need to cancel at the moment to investigate this further. Some new Help Documents on the Qantas website have been recently created to provide more information on the cancellation process, and voucher redemption processes.

More info here:

When plans change, rest assured that you can make changes to your flights too. You can now cancel any booking from or within Australia, online in no time.

If your booking was made on qantas.com or through Qantas Telephone Sales, and if your fare conditions allow, your booking will remain in the system as a credit voucher once it's been cancelled. You will be able to redeem this voucher online at a later date.

The voucher can be used anywhere on the Qantas network, from or within Australia.

After you've cancelled your booking, we'll email you details on how to redeem your credit voucher online. If you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer, your voucher will appear in your list of bookings, otherwise you can retrieve it at anytime from qantas.com/yourbooking.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Award bookings can also be cancelled on qantas.com.
