Well after deciding last November to get to Silver, I have now made it, a month or 2 early.

This achievement was made with a bit of work, a bit of pleasure and a bit of claytons-status runs (flying for pleasure when I won't otherwise fly).

It was also due, in no small part, to the information and guidance, and especially the patience and forbearance of all of you on AFF.

thank you

now for gold......

Congratulations medhead.

Enjoy the use of premium check-in (where it works) and some priority on your bags (again, where it works). And, slightly better seating preferences.

Oh, and 25% points loading plus 10 kg extra baggage doesn't hurt either.

You're still a pleb, but at least you have a bit of prestige above the masses now. ;)

You could say a 'Silver' coated pleb :!: :D

Congrats medhead. :D

Similar to me a couple of months ago Medhead . Congrats! You've (we've) timed it well with the introduction of online seat selection to PS and above.

good on ya - go for Gold now and achieve the heady heights of status

Good luck

Mr!

:)

Thanks everyone.

As a long time paid qantas club member (having decided that i would never fly enough to get status) my experiences now won't be exactly new, but perhaps different (doing it as a silver instead of bronze) + 25% bonus:D

Really this thread is about you, to thank you all for AFF, which has highlighted previously unknown tips (that seem obvious now), and got me thinking a bit more strategically about the whole thing.

A fine example of your help is the QF seat selection, which I'm only really aware of now that you mention it.

Like you, i'm also working my way up to PS. However, 've got a technical question for those who are more in tune to this:

I'll be making the qualifying SC in excess of 350 SC on my outbound on a JQ *class on the 21/8. Inbound will be on the 1/9.

My question is, how soon will your qualifying flight reflect in your QFF account (especially considering it's from a JQ flight), and once reflected, how soon does my status change to PS?

The complicating issue here is that my membership year ends on the 31/8. I'm only just scraping through. I'm planning for my inbound JQ flight's SC to count towards the next membership year.

benhadi,

What you have said is how it will work. With a little luck your outbound flight will post automatically and you will be silver for the return. The inbound will count to the next year.

If either do not post you will have to apply manually via the QF web site or by phone for the appropriate SC's and points to be posted manually.

Well done mate. A question for the rest:
If you obtain silver in a membership year, the next year you will only require 300 to requal for silver. Do you still need 700 to get gold? ie: once you are a silver, does it make it any easier to obtain gold in a subsequent year?
My guess is that it doesn't...but any experiences would be useful...

You need to obtain the full SCs for any status which you did not qualify for in the previous year. So in the case of the OP, next year only 300 SCs will be required to requalify for PS, but the normal 700 SCs for SG and 1400 SCs for WP will apply.

Thought so. Thanks mate.
Am going to miss out on Platinum this year by a few hundred points :(
Can't be bothered pushing it to get there. Maybe next year!

Say: What do the abbreviations mean?
ie: NB I guess is Bronze. PS is silver. SG is gold. WP is platinum, but what are the starting letters referring to?

Thanks. Noiw that is a LONG list of abbreviations! I find those status tiers funny as...

If you make PS, but are already a QP member, do you still get the 2 complimentary passes to the QP?

Yes, it's only 1 pass though (same for a PS with no QP).
Doh!
I had 2 "family and friends" I wanted to give my hoped for 2 passes to, hard choice now. The "family" usually travel in big groups, hence might not get to use the pass, the "friends" travel in pairs and are going to US in Aug, but blood is thicker. Decisions, decisions. Will have to get out a coin.

No rush. :) . It'll have ~12 months validity I suspect, so hang onto it for a while...I'm sure an appropriate occasion will arise when you can donate it to just one friend (travelling alone), without having to cause a split or any other ructions between people travelling together.
