Hi all,

looking for a recommendation.

Am going to book a classic award flight from NYC - SYD, however there is nothing available via LAX.

the 2 options i'm looking at are:

1 - via LHR, with a seat in first to LHR, then economy to SYD. 30hrs, 146k points

2 - via HKG, with a seat in business to HKG, then economy to SYD, on a CX flight. approx 26hrs

(i don't want to go via Japan while the nuclear thing is still ongoing)

have you done either? what was it like? was there any noticeable effect on jetlag going one way compared to the other?

many thanks!

Of the options you've mentioned, definitely via HKG. Heading westbound is generally easier on your system, plus the idea of whY all the way from LHR-SYD after F NYC-LHR is v unappealing!

I definitely second that.

Because my main program is Aadvantage our awards from the USA are usually via NRT-and doing it again in June.If the HKG flights are daylight as the NRT flights tend to be then very definitely via HKG.

LHR-SYD in Y is definitely not going to be very much fun. However, going into the CX coffin to HKG and then the back-breaking hard-shell Y to SYD probably won't leave you any better off. I would definitely have a hard look at other options. I also wonder if you have a choice of going Y+ for LHR-SYD, or perhaps try to get 71D/80A/K on the A380 from LHR-SYD?

If your flying after the 16th May try DFW - SYD. its a small hike NYC-DFW but the direct flight would be good.

What dates are you flying. There could be multi-city options via DFW/NRT and maybe others.

I think it depends on exactly how fat the a$$ of the pax is. If you are less portly then the CX lie flat seats are I fend very comfortable. In fact if it wasnt for the fact that you dont get a status bonus I would fly exclusively CX if I could.

unfortunately I'm travelling back in what appears to be school holidays - late september.

to complicate matters further i'll be with a friend so i think we'll have to book via the call centre to ensure we both get tickets.

i don't have anywhere near enough points for an ASA, and additionally no direct flights from DFW (as previously mentioned, am hesitant to go through Tokyo which is where they are stopping)

we're only young fellas and haven't experienced long haul 'luxury' before so i think we'll survive, it's more about being able to finally have a crack at the front end of the plane and enjoy the comfort.

The QF flights ex-DFW go to BNE and then SYD - even with that extra stop it should be shorter flying time than via LHR or HKG.

On the 27th you can fly BA182 (Business) and QF 32 (Economy) for 117000pts. Or if you're willing to slum it then NYC-DFW_SYD on the 24th for only 64000pts.

If you want to connect in LAX Maybe via NZ with QF or via NAN with FJ is another option. Or for that matter JQ *Class to Hawaii and AA to LAX or JFK.

Am doing the same trip. Originally had to fly via DFW/NRT/SYD, but I hit the jackpot with a Y seat popping up on QF12 on SEP30.

Premium classes on a classic award at that time of year - forget it! :(
